Another tyre question

I have been running down my 17" winter tyres as I am picking up a S Line with 18" wheels in a month but gonna get the summer tyres back on next week when it's in for its final service. My question is - is it best to put the best ones on the front or back. 2 have 6mm and 2 have 3mm. I always thought it was best to put the best on the front of a front wheel drive car but I seem to remember a tyre mechanic saying it was better to put the best ones on the back to increase stability?

New tyres or the better tyres always go on the rears, irrespective of driven wheels.
