I think we need a positive thread about the Olympics.

Just watched the opening ceremony and was very proud, music was superb and they had a song from the pistols !

Today the bike race never went to plan but there was a big crash.

I am going on Friday to the Olympics :)

What a great Idea Jase. I watched the full opening ceremony last night. I enjoyed the Music, especially the Arctic Monkeys and Emle Sandi. The lighting of the torch and fireworks was good to see. Im currently watching the mens gymnastics, its always good to watch. Hope you enjoy on Friday Jase. :) x

Just like to give a well deserved mention to the troops that are currently providing security at the Olympic games, depending how people see it, I luckily managed to dodge that bullet! on a downside, disappointed with the living conditions, food, pay and taking people off POTL that have just come back from Afghanistan.

Though it's not all work, I've been spammed with many pictures of my guys in photos with the likes of David Beckham and Dizzee Rascal and I got to watch the opening ceremony rehearsal in full via facetime ;) and lots of booze nights out in London!

To be honest I really enjoyed the opening ceremony I watched the whole lot, there was so much work that went into it and it was clever how they went through the ages, it made me proud to be British. The problem with this country is there are so many haters that will look for any little thing to put our hosting of the olympics down, it would be nice just once for us to all support or country in what we do wether its a good effort or a bad effort at least we have tried, I for one think we have done an amazing job of it so far.

I really don't get all the negativity aimed at the Olympics, we should all be proud it's here and embrace it whole heartedly!

I was lucky enough to be in the stadium on Wednesday night for the final technical rehersal which my family and I really enjoyed! The booming sound system and amazing light show was breathtaking! Some elements of the show were saved for Friday but we got to experience 70% of what was shown on tv. The queen/bond moment was superb!

The troops are doing a great job and deserve much praise for filling in for the monumental ck-up by G4S.

...I've also managed to get tickets for the 9th August and can't wait to see Usain Bolt in the 200m Final!

We got off to a great start, team GB are well on the way to success with several attempts to win a medal.

A great attempt to win a medal in the bike race, but according to Cavendish, it was the other countries at fault, so well done team GB, and boo rah to the rest of the world.

Lets hope all the hard work leads to a medal today.

I wanted to be impressed by the opening ceremony, I really did, but I wasn't.
My missus went the rehearsal on Wednesday and said it was amazing, but after watching the real thing on TV said it didn't translate well on the box, as the most impressive stuff (the sound system, the size of some of the props, and the sheer volume of people involved in it) was all lost on TV.

I also think the rest of the world looking in probably thought "what the hell is all this about, and who's the retard playing the piano??"
Industrial revolution... they were probably confused by this too, along with the majority of under 30s... from GB!!

It was a good effort, and definitely nothing to be embarrassed about, but wish it had the "wow" effect for the rest of the world to see.

    Now the negatives:

Starting events (football) days before the Games had started.
    North/South Korea flag cock-up.
Roof of Aquatic centre blocking the view of the diving board from some seats.
Empty seats across many events already.
Having stuff going on outside of London even though it's the London 2012 Olympics.
    Pointless Olympic lanes.
MASSIVE Olympic parking controlled zone which means I can't park outside of my parent's house until September even though she lives about 2 miles from the Olympic village.

    Positives:

Watching it on TV it really does "feel" like the Olympics. Thought it wouldn't.
People (especially round here in East London) really do feel proud about the Games being here.
Wall to wall sport on TV for the next few weeks.
The much needed improvements in and around the Olympic site.
    Beach volleyball.

    And finally....

    Come on GB!!!!!!
    (and Jamaica and China)

I'm hugely glad so many of our troops are guarding the games, rather than the morons that G4S employed (or didn't, as the case may be), at the same time recognising that the loss of their leave really sucks. I am taking more interest in the events than I expected I would beforehand, but will reserve judgement on whether it is a Good Thing generally until after I have tried to drive to work tomorrow morning. My alarm clock is set for 4.45am, as I need to get to (and through) the Blackwall tunnel well before 6am.

Ads, your missus is absolutely right, so true about it being lost on tv, for me the atmosphere and visual feast really didn't match up to what was experienced within the stadium.

I agree about the parking restrictions being a pain for friends and family but also pleased my road is practically empty now.

You know you can register visitors number plates online for a temporary pass. We've done this a few times already with no issues.

I'll be honest and say after the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony(I'm chinese and understood some of the history that went into it), GB was going to have a tough test for their opening ceremony.

I watched most of it during work with a break in between changing sites, and thought it wasn't a bad effort! I loved the James Bond/Queen cameo and Mr Bean twist to it all, very British, and the highlight for me was the lighting of the petals at the end, and it all elevating to create the cauldron at the end which was original.

I won't deny I had doubts before it all started, but it was above my expectation, and I'm ready to support GB(despite my chinese origins) after watching it!

    COME ON GB! :rockwoot:

    the special olympics.

i was a hater, but some aspects of the ceremony were pretty cool. the props, mainly that big hill thing was impressive.
i think the problem is with beijing being sooooo good, we really cant compete with that. Their ceremony was so full of history and culture, and it made it so interesting to watch, very elegant and beautiful. unfortunately, british culture is pretty ****, we arent a very interesting country with unique culture, so all we can demonstrate is a bloody fictional spy, a television idiot (bean), social networking, horrendous music over the years (not the pistols jase dont worry!), its not very WOW is it. I think its almost impossible to for any western country to compete with an eastern country, we just arent very interesting. the western world is ****.

just watching the fencing though, which is pretty awesome, must be bloody hard to judge though.

Mr bean was there that made it for me best Olympics just because of that fact ! and also because the queen looked like she would rather be taking peoples heads off with a .308 rifle than sit there pretending to smile at every one.

I liked the fact that the American TV stations thought Isambard Kingdom Brunel was Abraham Lincoln.

And that the Americans were disappointed that we let 7 unknown athletes light the flame. They wanted someone famous. We need to remind them that Reagan is dead.

well i watched it all from my comfy couch, (up until paul mccartney started ) and can honestly say i was quite impressed!
i did fear we would crash and burn and not live up to all the hype but was quite pleased!
some very cool effects and extremely well choreographed! i doff my hat to the volunteers!
i was glad to hear underworld tunes again and got me digging out old cd"s because they sounded so fresh and vibrant!
so for me it was a thumbs up! :icon_thumright:
even though now its on i have little interest in the whole deal at all, except the BMX racing, diving, and the 100m sprints!
if only beer drinking were an olympic sport though.................................:undwech:

I must admit i was an olympic hater. I got fed up having to search hotels etc when the torch was over here, and really did think whats the fuss. But after watching that ceremony i must say, WOW! , really proud to be british and the only bit that i didnt enjoy was when that mumbling scouse midget got on stage with his massive piano and huge ego. Loved how the athletes nominated youngsters to light the torches, the steelworks making the ring which then lifted up and the whole elevating petal thing was amazing, really well thought out! Well done Danny Boyle! loud surround sound helped too i guess!

    It was a 'spectacular' show...........

BUT. Sadly, for the most part, it was nothing more than Politically Correct socialist propaganda..!!

I watched it in HD on our 42" plasma with 7.1 surround and thought it was amazing, right up until Paul came on, he should retire and Tom Jones should have been up there, his voice and performances seem to be getting better the old he gets.

Olympic flame was an awesome design, I really hope it was engineered in GB.

Highlight for me was the entrance of team GB to Heroes by David Bowie - perfect track. :thrashi:

I think that G4S should be paying rather large bonuses to the troops that have lost leave to cover their asses.
