An intermitant rattle or tapping on start up from cold.

great thread and advice chaps...

I've got a very similar noise on startup, albeit nowhere near as loud, and taking the advice i figured i'd clean out the sump and pickup filter, but also to replace the oil pump whilst i'm at it for some peace and mind. However, after reading the engine builder mag article i'm thinking, asides from a nice piece of maintenance, this is going to do JS to the noise even if i decide to swap out the camshaft tensioner as well! Is this going to be a case of spending time and ££s on chasing a non-existent problem???

When ya say your isnt as loud have you listened to it with the bonnet up as mine doesnt sound as loud when the bonnet is closed.

And mine isn't regular, warm cold etc. Surely this fault would issue a code on a fault finder? The only other noise I have is on slow acceleration which the local volkswagen dealer said it was the cat whilst servicing it. I really can't afford to fix this issue if it is cam tensioner as I've spent a fortune on the s3 in the little time I've had.

Ok guys got the car serviced today and the oil pick up cleaned out. The mechanic told me the pick up wasnt even bad.
Anyway the noise is still there so I am gonna order a new cam tensioner and have it fitted.

Hi mate i had mine replaced the other day, the adjuster it self is over 300, I did not not have a noise like that in the video, had a slight noise from startup but went after a second or so, but it thought that was normal? but to be honest since having that done, i have not noticed it at all,

After you have had the Cam-Tensioner changed please let us know if it cured the problem.

Good Luck.

I am going to buy the part from the states from the link a S3 Nattie posted above its only 213 dollars and its the exact same part.
Also the noise of mine comes across much louder in the video it doesnt actually sound that loud really but I Am getting it sorted anyway.

Hi mate that seems a very good price, i got a specialist to do mine, and supply the part, maybe i should have got the part myself lol, are you doin it yourself?

I would give it a go myself if I had a garage but sadly I dont. The guy who serviced my car will do it for me shouldnt cost me too much this way compared to buying from Audi direct.

Ok guys I have ordered the cam tensioner and rocker cover gasket kit. The guy doign the job mentioned maybe fitting a new chain while I am at it as there not too pricey. What do ya reckon?

unless your car is on mega mega mileage, ie 200k++ then no, they dont stretch that much

Tnx Matt.
I just had the sump dropped and the pick up cleaned the guy doing it said it wasnt overly bad. What else could cause the tensioner to fail?

audi variable servicing. ie keeping oil in an engine for 20k miles for the sake of saving a few pennies.

i suppose it did save the original owners a few pennies, it just causes headaches for the 3rd-4th owners down the line

i said in another thread that ive got a few dead tensioners around and that they have a VERY fine mesh at the oil inlet.

im really tempted now to put some new plastic boots on an old tensioner and take out the mesh and install it on my golf and see what happens

Hi guys,

Some good advice on here - I wasjust thinking about replacing my cam adjuster on A3 1.8T Q so thanks for the links for the part and the guides.
However just out of interest I called my local Audi Specialist - Star Performance in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. They quoted the following:
Part: £312 +VAT
Gaskets: £6 + VAT
Labour: 1.5 Hrs
TOTAL Inc. VAT: £457.33

Surprised me as this seems like quite a good price. I think I will probably still give it a bash myself though as im properly skint just now!

Will keep you updated & thanks again.

Mark

the £300 part is if yours has VVT. does it?

I just had this done a few weeks back, apart from they charged me 5 hours labour:think: not 1.5, and was quite a bit more, than your price, that seems good in my eyes lol

time to name and shame the "specialist" in question haha

I would never do that,i was pleased with the service, but even my mechanic mate said 5 hours was too much, and was annoyed i never asked him, but still itsone of those things,

i dont see why not, they stitched you up like a kipper even after id shown you elsa win etc

Got my tensioner from the states today :w00t:
Cant wait for my car to be noise free :lmfao:

UPDATE:

Ok guys I had the tensioner replaced and the noise is totally gone. Happy Days:rockwoot:
Also I used to have a vibration noise at low revs which I taught was the exhaust heat shield but its now gone since the tensioner was changed so it obviously wasnt the heat shield.

Tnx to all the guys who advised and helped me.:icon_thumright:

Oooohhh, that'll the the same noise I get on mine then!.

Crap!

I've got the same problem. Knew there was a reason the car was cheap haha. Quick question, where do you get the tensioning tool from? I'll be fixing this over the xmas break...
