AMI suddenly saying device firmware is out of date/needs updating

Just had this issue this morning. I've got the yellow lead. Been working fine for months. Was driving for 30 min today. Got some fuel plugged phone in and I had this message. Saying device or firmware needed updating!
Plugged in phone loads of times with no joy. Just got home, plug the iPad in and this worked fine. Tested my iPhone and this suddenly worked too. Result I thought. So then I plugged my iPad in and this gave me the same firmware notification. True to form my iPhone then refused to connect. Anyone have his issue? Is the cable faulty? Seems so odd how within the space of 30 min it's all gone to pot!

This is odd, after an MMI reset it works but only for a while. I've turned the car on and off and unplugged the phone a few times. After this i get the same message about device not supported.
