I was looking for a replacement light unit with ambient light (leds) but they seem to be in great demand and very expensive. It occurred to me that surely Audi wouldn't waste cash having radically different units for other Audis. I saw a unit from a B5 A4 on eBay and it looked similar - it also had the ambient LEDs and the map lights and it was £12 including postage so I thought I'd give it a go - if it didn't work out, I'd only be £12 down.

Long story short - you can change the internals over and fit the trim plate and it all works, plug and play, so I now have OEM ambient light and map lights for £12.

I could go and look up the A4 numbers off the parts, but TBH that won't help cos you just strip out the common bits and fit 'em to your A3 unit.

Before - just removed the cover and you can see the sockets for where the map lights go

This is the one off eBay (seen from above) the only significant difference is the presence of the hardware in the map light bulb holders, the map light switches and the small plastic housing on the right that holds the two leds for the ambient lighting.

Next job is to strip all this out and transfer to the existing housing on my car.

Thanks, trouble is after searching my car has the dark headlining and it seems the A4 doesn't have a version to match, back to square one.
