does anyone know if 18 x 9's will fit the rear of a b5 1.8t????
Not without looking completely stupid.
i had 8*19's and when lowered they just rubbed the arch with et35 offset and 235/35/19 tyres.
ye, 8" is about as wide as you can sensibly go on a normal A4.
some folk have sqeezed 8.5's on and FWD's do tend to have a little more room at the rear so you can play around with the offset, but the biggest issue is you cant really go much wider than 235 tyres, and 235's on an 8.5" rim is already pushing it.
they will fit with arch work but you need low offset to clear the upright, not to mention RS4 arches to cover the wheel/tyre.
My arches are rolled (no inner lip) but not flared (same outer profile)
I ran ET24 8.5x18 with 245/40 tyres, plenty of upright clearance, now run the same wheel and 235/40, they are perfect fit. no stretching at all, it is what they should be wearing IMO (the RS4 crowd will have you on 255/35's which I think is too much of a width difference between tyre and wheel).
I have a slight wheel protrusion but I like it!
I think the 255 is standard fit on the RS4 isnt it?
i'm running 225/45 on my 7" boleros, which is OEM fitment, and a difference of just under 2" between the tyre and the rim
255/35's on 8.5" is actually a smaller difference of only 1.5"
I dont like sticky out wheels, although yours arent too bad because the tyres arent all stretched inwards like the golf fanboys seem to like. I just think it makes it looks like you've baught wheels that dont fit properly, and reminds me of my youth when you'd see corsas driving around with ripspeed specials or TSW venoms sticking out the arches by several inches.
255/35 is standard, which I find weird on a performance car
255mm is 10.03"
the 255mm measurement is only taken across the width of the tyre tread and the 8.5" is taken between the upright sections of the wheel.
If you take into account that there is always some exterior non tread material on the outside of the tyre as it blends into the tyre wall there is no way that can not create a \ / shaped tyre wall profile at the top ( / \ at the bottom).
it is not as stable and under load the tread section moves in relation to the wheel.
Pretty sure the only reason factories spec oversized wheels is to protect wheels from kerbage!
I like the Michelin PS2's for that, they have a built in side wall rib above the rim
What i'm saying though is the 225's on my boleros have a bigger difference.
the RS4 has 10" wide tyres on 8.5" rims.
I'm running 8.8" tyres on 7" rims.
The sidewalls are perfectly parallel though.
The measurement of rim width is taken across the insides of the wheel mounting flange, ie the bit the bead seats onto, not the external face of the wheel, so its competely normal to expect quite a difference between the two.
You also need to remember the sidewalls are designed to support the tread, if you've stretched them onto a wide rim (not saying you have, but just talking about the theory) then the sidewalls are pulled taught, and cant properly control the treads movement. On a narrower rim (ie one the correct size) the tread will move around, but it will move around in a way that the tyre manufacturer has designed it to move, in order to maximise traction under load etc.
