Possible bearing issues perhaps?? maybe a lack of oil at some point has damaged it.

I get that turbos whistle, but I'd also worry about a screeching noise if I didn't know that it was supposed to do that.

Do all turbos "screech" or just small ones like the K03?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Chipped K03's make a loud screaching whislte... very high pitched. K04's are less high pitched, but still pretty loud. You should hear the IHI.... Sounds like a jet engine starting up!

i think your all missing the point here. the turbo whistles yep true, after remap it whistles and sucks louder yep true. i have a large maf and ttda airbox so it is louder than normal, true. but imagine you put your foot down at 45mph in top gear, the boost goes into overboost mode and peeks 25 psi. this is when it screeches. if you put your foot down at 45mph in second it wouldnt screech although still hiting overboost mode, the engine is using the boost. its kind of like , when your engine would "pink". is when the screech would happen.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hmm... maybe doesnt sound QUITE right then... Whos remap do you have?

My old Ibiza (K03 turbo) was remapped and hit 20psi peak. It was totally silent always. The K04 on my S3 is fairly loud as standard

    A few different opionions here.

I guess we all need to understand what is meant my a "whistle" or a "screach".

As I can't hear the sound I can't really add any more info. But as far as I can tell in your application s3ugly, I'm going to say that perhaps the sounds isn't wuite normal.

I'm get myself along to a VW/Audi tuner that have good knowledge about the turbo engine and ask to take one of the mechanics out for a spin. Just to be sure.

As always, I'm could and probably am wrong :)

it sound just like a fan belt slipping ..its been on the rollers at well lane turbo, the guys there were scratchin there heads for an hour. lookin and listening, with microphones etc , called amd up. they said look at the impeler for wear or movement , signs of the impeler touching the housing, as the psi is not droping and there are no leaks, they drew a blank. but it seems like a lot of people are having this noise after remaps

I just put it down to the turbo being allowed to produce more boost after the new code, whereas the N75 may have been partially opening the wastegate to dump some boost off to keep a nice progressive torque curve. Or am I torquing **** ?

This sound like a 'squealing or screaching belt' type of thing has been mentioned on rs246 on some remapped RS4s - expert opinon/assumption is that it is the turbo/s overspinning with too much boost - not a good thing I assume?

there are plenty of posts on this screeching noise on audiworld.com - seems to be a bit of a mystery... just search on screech through the TT forum. apparently mainly confined to revo remaps.... getting rid of screens or something in MAF reduced the noise. but i notice u have a big maf housing and ttda like myself so not sure.

Are your sure your turbo has not lost balance ? careful - it might blow at any time if the balance is off or the seals are broken

Old thread I know, but anyone else with this issue and a possible solution.

See, I too have this Screeching noise...Say I hit the gaspedal at 30-40mph in 3rd or 4th and then when the turbo initially builds up power it makes that screeching noise for 0.5-1-5 second, loosing a little boost (or hesitating slightly), screech noise dissapear and then it builds up nice and quick at max boost. If I floor it in first gear and keep the boost up through the gears there's no sound...except the good ones .-)

What's "wrong"...Car is 2001 S3 AMK with 72K on the clock. Remapped 1 week ago and the screeching noise was definately not there before remap. Max boost 1.6 (3rd and 4th gear). No modifications other than remap...

Tufftybloke had this, its a common thing according to badger Bill.

Its probably not a bearing issue, more likely this air squeeling sound. ( I cannot remeber the exact name )

Was there a way to cure it? It can't be good for the turbo?

Anyway its not the flutter sound some have when you go off the gaspedal...many confuses the two phenomenons but this is deffo a screeching sound not a "fluttt-flut-fluttter" sound.. :)

Really the only thing that annoy me, other than that the car flyes...:yahoo:

Having a search on other VAG based forums have netted the following:

'Cavitation, harmonic resonance caused by the air flow being disrupted. This is happening due to a lack of volumetric effeciency either on the compressor side or the turbine side of the turbo, as we know these turbos are limited by the intake and outlet to and from them'

    and

'...the noise you're hearing is due to 'cavitation'. This is the point at which the turbo runs out of puff basically and cannot push air any faster. The noise itself is turbulence in the intake caused by the compresser wheel. It can be fixed by turning the boost down a couple of settings... however this will make less power. Any glitches that are felt along with this noise are most likely down to intake pulses caused by cavitation.'

From what Bill at Badger 5 tells me its common on K04 turbo'd cars as remapping takes them near to the limit of their airflow capabilities. Mine does the same, not all the time but it does do it. Only real solutions is to back off the boost or maybe go hybrid turbo but from what I understand, most of the flow restrictions on the S3 are to do with the exhaust manifold as its a very poor design. Better manifold and downpipe will help here but its expensive and there isn't any real power gain to be had although the engine does breath better as a result... so I am told :)

Seems odd as fitting a Milltek won't give you much if anything over the std exhaust system anyway.

The restrictions are at the manifold and downpipe from what I have been told plus the K04 is pretty maxed out on most normal remaps let alone anything special.

Ess_Three has done a lot of work in this area, not sure you are really gonna benefit power wise or provide a platform for more power by just getting a Milltek fitted unless you go hybrid/mani/downpipe...

I am sure I will be corrected though :)

I too get this noise ever since the remap. I was scared it was turbo screeching but its not as surely the turbo would do it all of the time. Its more likely the air rushing about or 'Cavitation' as mentioned above.

I've heard a better TIP can reduce the noise somewhat but i'm happy to live with it for now

yep can confirm my silicone tip reduced it, although it has since become as audible as it was prior to me fitting the new tip....

I would have a search about and read up on the benefits and experiences with fitting these parts before you commit mate, there has been a lot of discussion over this (I have been reading lots) and general opinon is that there is no real gain to be had by fitting these parts under certain circumstances and therefore unless your cat is buggered etc you are prob better off saving your money.

Ess_Three has done all this before and has documented the results in some of the stickies and in reply to similar threads (as have others...)

Of course that generally wouldn't stop someone from buying these bits, thats what its all about after all but its always better to manage expectations as beyond a remap, the cost per BHP gained increases dramatically.... £350/400 gets you a decent 40/50bhp increase, a further 5/10bhp though can set you back thousands more...

Just something to think about... which reminds me... I must get around to fitting my FMIC!! lol....

Thanks again, always nice with help and advice...!!

Well put. Remap is so easy and cheap but if you want another 10 little ponies it'll set you back a lot of cash...Stupid to do it really. Rather save the money and go BT.
I was thinking of those upgrades in order to help the turbo get rid of that nasty Screech. I expect no "gains" other than more noise from the exhaust and turbo which I'm not sure I want really...I just hope the turbo will last a while...and I will of course adapt the driving style a little to avoid the Screech...

Only further "reasonable priced" upgrades regarding the engine are:

Dahlback "racing" intake which were redicously cheap (to see if flows better and keeps a few degree cooler)
Phenolic thermal intake gasket (which will isolate some heat from the engine block)
TIP (prevent collapsing and give a little bit better airflow)
Forge 007p (just because the one I have now, Kimmit DV, makes a rather annoying sound)
K&N filter and modified airbox and air duct down to where the old SMIC were
    Forge FMIC (for obvious reasons)

    Cheers...

If you are planning to go BT I would save your money for that as all the bits you are planning on buying will need to be replaced anyway. (except the FMIC of course). Replace the TIP and DV if you want to (can be resold easily enough), don't worry about the K&N as the std paper one isn't restrictive, the Phenolic thermal intake gasket will be a PITA to change for no gain at the moment, wait until you get your BT in....

The guy I see to sort my car is doing a BT on an A3 (http://audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=52270) I have seen the kit going into this, its gonna be bonkers!!!

If you defo thinking of going BT, save your cash mate.... you'll get it sooner ;P

Yeah I've subscribed to that thread...interesting build! I ain't going BT now, maybe never, but if things develop like I hope (new business) I'm driving the car to the UK and get the pro's to fit a nice BT kit. We'll see...or maybe I'll get the S3 8P and start the modding all over...

The intake, I bought that a while ago for 180 euros so it'll go on...It'll look good if nothing else hehe...and since I'm already changing the intake the gasket will be replaced too..have the phenolic gasket right here. Btw, what do you mean it is pita to install? Any tips?

My bad... got it around my neck :)
Excuse my dumbassness as for some reason I was thinking exhaust mani not intake mani... the intake is easier, if you have the bits already then fair enough... Like I said, I have no personal experience of al lot of this kit but I research a lot as I have an interest and I am careful what I spend my cash on (most of the time anyway). I can't see the point in spending loads on stuff that does nothing and can't be seen and wouldn't like to think that other people should without at least having some information in front of them to make thier own mind up.

I would really like to go BT but have other things that I need to spend the money on.... paint work first for me as the previous owner did a ***** job on my passenger side sadly :(

As for tips, set yourself aside a day or so with access to another car and an open motor factors/dealer just in case you need to get a dipstick tube or gasket that you didn't think you would need. Seems to be the way of doing any little job on an S3 tbh.... :)

You're absolutely right...sometimes I get carried away and buy stuff that I really don't need. All car related really. It's a hobby tho...And I learn all the time...and I have a nice ride at the same time

Yeah the dipstick I'm a bit worried about as it's very fragile and could crack even by just looking at it. I also don't see how it will fit around the new intake...hmm...will give a good thought out before doing anything...

My IHI squeals/whistles too. Anything over 23psi........so I run it at 22. I put it down to a characteristic.
