Toying with the idea of getting my ECU chipped but since its old and can't be done via the ODB port, I've been thinking about getting one off ebay.
Send that away to get chipped, swap it over with mine and then sell mine on.

I guess it works in theory but is there any difference between newer or older AFN ECUs?
Would it be advisable to get a newer 110 AFN ECU over a older or same age as what I'm running at the moment?

    Thoughts?

I have a similar problem with mine. 1.8t AEB. Ecu unable to communicate via ODB port. I have been told I could use an AGU ecu. Not quite sure if this would work, and then have that re-mapped. Could you not do anything similar. Don't know much about the diesels I'm afraid and any input on my predicament would also be appreciated.

What year is your b5 ? There are 3 types of ECU fitted on the b5, 1 is a EDC15 and is writeable trough the OBD- only fitted to very late facelifted b5 with AFN/AHU/AHH and AVG engines. the other two are a MSA15 type ECU's and will require old chips removal and new sockets to be soldered to the PCB.

    Are the ECU's interchangable?

IE can he find an EDC15 and fit it to his car? Or are the IP's different on the EDC versions?

    1998.
So no chance of it having a EDC15 but like Aragorn said.
    Can I fit one?

EDIT:=- Would I need a ECU from a Auto since mine is an Auto?

Autobox ECU is separate IIRC. should just need coding with VCDS. so could use any.

That's what I'm hoping and going by what Adamss said, if I can fit a EDC15 ECU to my car. I'd be laughing..........Hopefully.

Petrol ECU's cant be "coded" for an Autobox. The actual program code the ECU runs is different. Not sure if diesels are the same, i believe some later diesel ECU's are switchable between manual and auto, but not sure if that applies here.

I have a chipped ecu done by superchips, it will work on your and it does not need codding. I could part with it for the right money...
