I've had one for three years now. There are no major faults with them, but they are high maintenance cars. You can't run them on the cheap.

Engines are strong, but observe the basic rules. Change the oil regularly, and don't rev it hard until the engine is at full temp (by that I mean the oil temp, not just water temp). You've rightly picked up on the cambelt (maximum mileage between changes is 70K).

The Quattro system is pretty reliable, but they can suffer from an oil leak from the rear output shaft at the back of the gearbox. Front suspension control arms should have been renewed under recall. If they haven't ask why not and negotiate a discount.

As far as everything else is concerned, the normal rules apply. Condition and documented history are everything. Prices will depend on age, but there are plenty of price guide services on the net.

Don't use Audi franchised dealers. Any 2.8Q you will buy will be a minimum of five years old, so well outside the warranty period. Find yourself a good local independent garage with a strong reputation or, depending where you are in the country, be prepared to travel to one of the well known non-franchised Audi specialists like Fontain (Buckinghamshire) or Kim Collins (West Sussex).

    Hope this helps.

No major problems on mine which I've had for 7 years & 120k miles (bought 2nd hand with 40k on the clock).
Make sure they changed the waterpump along with the cambelt & tensioner as Audi don't do this as a matter of course and to change the water pump later is another 5 hours of labour with the front of the car having to be removed again. The water pump will fail at aound 90-100k miles and will take most of your 30 valves with it if you're unlucky.
The only problem I had with mine was a leaking steering rack at around 90k miles. This is a big ticket item as you can only get them from Audi, either new or refurbed and its £800 including labour just for a refurbed unit.
Just make sure the climate control is working well as again it's costly replacing compressors/dryers etc.
You should be able to get one relatively cheap these days as 24mpg is not to everyones liking.
Mine cost £18.5k in 1999, probably worth £2k now, but it's all paid for via car allowance through work, so she doesn't owe me anything.

I dont know why one of there dealers wont ship them here. You would think they would want the $$$ for them and you would be paying the shipping so no loss to them.
