The Mrs had the car today, when she got back she asked if it was normal for the steering to go very heavy.

So I went out, started it up, the steering turns absolutly fine, gave it abit of revs and it went heavy, then light. The steering goes heavier and lighter as you rev or let off.

    Any ideas people?

Went out earlier, seems abit better when cooled down.

I'm thinking maybe the pump, looks a fairly easy job to do. Going to try a second hand one, unless anyone thinks a flush and refill with genuine audi oil might help?
With it being rev effected, i'm thinking the pump

Hi Turkster. Mine squeals like a pig being tortured! The steering feels fine but is it something I should get looked at? Would it fail an MOT? cheers.

Mine squeeled on full lock, checked the fluid level and it was a bit low, topped up and the squeel went away, all good now. There is no leak so cant understand how the level was low. however looking at the colour of the fluid its in need of a change, looks very old and dark and not the required green colour. Anyway if its squeeling check the fluid level theres a dipstick on the underside of the cap.

Squealing is apparently down to the pulley on the alternator.

Fluid levels are ok though fella.

Well about 250 miles this weekend and you'd have no idea it was broken during the week.

Got 2litres of vw green mineral fluid en route and a new pump, just incase.
