hi pal, start with a full service if its the engine mechanicals running rough and change all oils inc gearbox then from there if everything else ok on the car like all suspension bushes etc maybe look at remap and possibly block egr valve off, might help a little.
    not really sure what else!

The engines fine never misses a beat, it's the ride, I think it's gradually got worse

probably just tired dampers tbh. a new set of oe springs and some bilstein b6's would transform it.

it would not be to cheap if you was to replace them all and things like bushes would make it stiffer as well price for shocks range from 51 up to 116 each springs are around 60 each for the rears and 65 each for the fronts thats from europarts so may get them a bit cheaper if you look around then you have the price for all the bushes/ arms for oem ones around 400 for the fronts thats both sides then the backs but im not sure whats under there ;-)

That's too expensive I want to replace it in the next 12-18 months for a BMW E60 530 M Sport :) well I must be honest I'm trying to swap it now for something smaller like a A3, Golf, Leon until then

if you renew the suspension you might find a new liking for driving it. tbh honest @ 169000 miles whatever is going to go wrong has already gone wrong and been fixed. from a financial point of view it makes sence to fix it and keep it, rather than lose money in depreciation on an e60 5 series.
also why swap it for an a3/leon thats going to be worth less in the future?
as long as you dont cover it in body work damage, and maintain it to a good standard.... reguardless of mileage, the car you have is never going to be worth less than what it is now. people will always want a4 avant tdi's.

If we are to help accurately you need to be a bit more detailed, how exactly does it feel? It's a bit like saying 'my car feels iffy, if I change the thingy, will it fix it? ;)

old shockers that are past it can make the car feel stodgy and soft, wallowly round corners etc, kinda like theres 10-15psi in all the tyres. bottoms out easily when coming off speed humps. dives and pitches when braking/accelarating.

any of this ringing any bells?

if you do replace them its not exactly dead money. altho it wont make the car worth more as such it'll definatly make it more desirable and easier to sell.

if its a fwd id take a look at the rear axle mounting bushes. if you have say a dull thud/bang as a rear wheel drops into a pot hole. its a sign they are worn. if the rear axles moving around a bit that'll make it feel undirect and slightly unpredictable feeling when cornering too.
