Hi folks, this has probably been discussed before but a quick search didn't bring much up!

So what i'm asking is what are people realistically getting mpg wise from their 1.8T & 2.0T B7's?

I'm looking to get a new car but we don't do a great deal of mileage. Well i do in my van but i'm in that 5-6 days most weeks so it will mainly be the Mrs pottering around in the Audi taking our 17 month old to playgroups & going out for brunch & afternoon tea with her mates! :)

So mpg isn't a big priority but also don't want something that's only averaging 25mpg neither. I'm not bothered about hearing what mog they get when driven hard because my Mrs always has our son in the car with her so she's steady away

    thanks

    Craig

For the type of mileage and pattern of driving you're describing, would a TDi be worth considering?

Mine 1.8t Auto Convertible used to average 30-35mpg on the standard 17inch wheels. Since I put on the 19inch RS4 wheels with wider tyres, I've been getting about 25mpg;(

Not sure if you misread the mileage part but as I said above she doesn't do hardly any miles. I bet it's no more than 100 per week if averaged out so to me it seems pointless getting a diesel as I've been repeatedly told they not good for just doing short runs all the time. DPF etc clogging up as not getting driven enough

    Hej Craig,

From my experience the 2.0t's don't like town traffic....they just sit there drinking the stuff! Once on A road's and motorways they are pretty good on average. Check out my Fuelly.com mpg history for an idea, please remember I very seldom do Urban City driving....it's mostly open A road and Motorway IKEA land km's. If you are only doing 30mph stuff around your town ...you might be in for a nasty surprise MPG wise.....as I understand both engines don't like crawling. BTW I have a MTM stage one remap and 17's wheels at the mo'.

    Good Luck,
    BR

Thanks. We live a bit out in the sticks so most of it is driving between the surrounding villages our friends & family are spread over. She doesn't drive that often in city/town traffic. When she does go into town shopping she usually goes once traffic has died down

My 2.0TFSI(auto) does 30-35mpg on the motorway with a heavy foot, but around town in busy traffic its about 14-18mpg.

thanks for the input guys! i'm still undecided about petrol or diesel! diesels do seem to hold their money a bit better as well! got to the point where i'm doing my own head in looking on the autotrader every night!

I only went for the 2.0TFSI as i am no longer doing the miles. If i had my time again i would have got a triptronic quattro tbh. Mixed reviews on the mpg of the diesels when i looked. I wanted auto though.

will definitely be going for manual! i'm just old school that way & prefer a clutch & gearstick! driven all sorts of tipt motors & just don't enjoy the feel!

Also the only time i'v ever owned a tipt car the first time my Mrs drove it she nearly put us through the windscreen when she went for the non existent clutch pedal & hit the brake! i bollocked her, she got upset then never drove it again! lol!

If i was not so lazy i would have a manual too :)
I had a BMW triptronic and loved it. Went manual last year in a golf and now back in auto mode forever :)

Take your time looking for the right car and ask some of the more knowledgeable members on here for info etc.

will do, not in a major rush. I've got the cash & don't need to sell our other car first so can take my time. Only been to actually look at 1 motor so far & as soon as i opened the drivers door i immediately shut it as it stunk of cigs! Was a 2008 320d Touring. Also been browsing 330d M Sport Touring & Volvo V50 D5 R Design for something a bit different!

Sorry if the words "BMW" or "Volvo" offends anyone on here! Just have to keep options open! lol

As previous posts mention, take your time.... there are tons out there and if you can be patient you'll grab a good one.

Go with your original thoughts and don't get a diesel, short trips will end up costing you a fortune in blocked dpf / egr new turbo etc repairs and the mpg difference won't make up for the 8-10p a litre price difference... Mrs has a 1.8t and it gets 26-30 mpg short journeys and 35+ on long ones. Puts my 170tdi Quattro to shame, that only does 28-35 round town!! And 42max on the motorway!!

I'm running a 2.0T with a stage 1 remap and average high 20's. Most of my mileage is around town and fairly low speed with the occasional thrash to clear the pipes. It will happily average 40 on a long run.

My 2.0t 2wd avant average 30-32 pretty much every tank. Not the best but for the low mileage we do, not really a problem. If I was buying it again I'd consider the 3.0tdi as it's a tad better on fuel, especially on a long run. But I do love the power, it's effortless and flies when you need it to.

My 2.0 Auto Petrol A4 does 18 - 25 MPG round town, depending on traffic (300 miles to a tank) and 35-ish on a run.

Thanks for the feedback guys but I........erm........ bought a BMW! Spotted a 2007 330d Touring at a very good price. Mikes are higher than I wanted but compared to similar cars with nearly same mileage & spec it cheap so had to ho have a look! I did a full diagnostic as I have BMW software & it came up with clean bill of health & drove spot on.

It's had dpf delete & supposedly a stage 2 remap but going get that checked out. I did look at a few B7 A4 2.0 TDi 170's but none if them gave me that "buy me" feeling I get when looking for a car

unfortunately my Mrs will be enjoying it more than me as it's going to be her daily when i'm out in my van. It does have the odd mark here & there but nothing major. Still think it was a bargain. The only 1 in the same spec & year I found was £1000 more & that said "mileage discrepancy" in the advert. When i contacted to ask what the discrepancy was the only reply i got was "87k"

They didn't say if that was what the difference between displayed mileage & MOT check etc. So when i asked all they could say was 87k is displayed on the clocks. I asked if they'd done a history check & they just said they hadn't got any paperwork. The vague answers & lack of wanting to try help clarify anything made it sound too iffy so didn't bother.

Anyways, the next similar spec 330d after that was £2500 more which had about 25k less on the clocks. I didn't think 25k less was worth an extra £2500. I was more than happy with the spec mine had & it has the nice 18" BMW 124 alloys from the 5 series as well as M Sport brake upgrade. Was initially going to go for an M Sport but i know the ride can be a bit firm which my Mrs would hate so went for the SE
