I think you aim more about 260 to be honest with hybrid turbo.

Cant imagine a 300bhp diesel being particularly cheap thing to run?

What are the costs associated with a tune tune that level?

and Diesel is far more better cruiser:p. By the way 260 is far enough for a diesel, you get a lot of wheel spins even when stock remember.

Guy on my local VAG club has a Leon with the 170 engine. His is 236bhp 350ish ft-lbs at the minute. He was saying a hybrid doesnt do a huge amount on these. Place in leeds who`s pretty good on diesel tuning is testing with a turbo which is good for just over 300bhp at the minute but cocked up on the injectors so its not gone too far as yet apparently. He said no one really has gone past stage 2 with the 170 engine so its all murky water at the minute.

the thing is pretty much anything is possible if you throw enough money at it, the fact that your taking an engine and tuning it that much is going to be putting a lot of strain on engine, drive train, suspension and braking components, so it could end up costing you a lot more money to get to these figures then starting off with a better base car as most S3's running V-power push around the 280hp mark and thats without any mods, also a car that heavily modified will need servicing much more often and you will get bent over by your insurance company

but thats just my opinion, best of luck and get some pics up!

i hear you :) .. ive also read 45mpg-50mpg from these engines even when stage 2 hybrid'd cooler clutch exchaust etc... s3 im not away of mpg but i highly doubt it will be near these figures, i just want a project for the next year or so , want to do the full exterior s3 looks (without the s3 badges ofcourse) and get as much grunt as possible from this engine. i want somthing i can pay with and spend my hard earned on. everyone to their own :)

haha the S3 isnt the most economical, day to day i get about 280-300 out of a tank, pure motorway i could prob push near 400... driving it hard haha then it doesnt last long
thats the thing, each to their own and as long as you know all the pitfalls and other option your doing the best thing for you. after all if were all had the same ideas it would be a very boring site!
make sure you get a build thread going when you start as will be good to see the progression!

As a `pound for pound` S3 beating exercise its a dubious route, if you roll up the costs for fuel, tuning, costs, depreciation, servicing, over say..a 3 yr period then a would bet the S3 is a cheaper alternative. However as a excercise to prodcue your own personalised uber fast derv then it makes sense as a tuning project.

    Good luck with the project.

    cheers

300whp you'l stuggle to get. 280ish is more realistic, thats what im looking to get once i get round to buy injectors. Ye FR&RTuning have done all mine so can recommend. Infact all them parts you listed ive got :p

I'm looking to do the same sort of thing to my 170CR but have been told only around 215hp is available with a de-dpf. To get more you need upgraded injector nozzles, and then if you want more again a hybrid turbo.

Custom Code phase 2 DPF delete will get around 230 with a panel filter and a catback.

Does anyone know why this is? Why is the PD more tunable than the CR, I assume it's different injectors?

I spent thousands modding by old vrs Fabia (Allard turbo, FMIC, brakes, suspension, exhaust, clutch, various maps the whole lot) probably around £4k+ and used to kid myself thinking "hey I get 50mpg"

Let's face it £4k is a lot of fuel..

In reality it wasn't that quick compared to a mildly modded petrol turbo and I certainly wouldn't to it again.

Great to be a bit different at the time but now my tdi days are for the daily commute only.

Good luck with it all. Cheers. :)

edited: thinking about it I reckon I blew at least £5k+....

Its all about power weight ratio and its always cheaper to shift weight than gain power. If you want some fun strip it out first and get the weight down because that is what kills all a3/s3's

I have a 170 PD A3 and i am only getting 36 -40 on long runs as standard so over 50 modified is just not possible. The first big mod on the 170 is to remove the stupid DPF but no DPF removal kit is made for the 4wd A3, you have to take the risk of taking the DPF out and open it then empty it and re-make it. Then you have to get it to a tuner to re-map it. I am with everyone else go out and buy an S3 and have it tuned to 300+ you will save a lot of money over 3 years!

+1 on this. If your spending that sort of cash your probably going to be better off lightening panels, interior bits etc. And by doing that you won't have to do the brakes, and you'll get a massive MPG increase too. If its your everyday car then your not going to want to strip it out, but by being careful you can shed a hell of a lot of weight without loosing much quality. Look at alloys first, get some lightweight alloys and you can loose 30KG straight up. Then you could look into carbon replacement panels, you'll have an equally, if not more unique car doing that than just throwing cash at your engine.

If you strip it out enough for a decent weight loss - what was the point in buying an Audi in the first place!

300bhp out of a 170PPD engine is going to be a hell of a lot of work, and in my personal opinion more trouble than its worth, that being the fact I am not a massive fan of the uprated injector nozzles!

Not sure on the costs on these injector nozzles, but I do remember them recommending that the nozzles are to only be used with brand new injectors, which on a 170PPD coming in at £463.44+VAT Each (£556.13inc) that is £2,224.52 worth of injectors before you have even bought the nozzles and turbo etc.

We do offer tuning on the 170CR engines and can achieve between 200-210bhp, without removing the DPF filter:-

If "your not a fan of uprated nozzles" in other words you are incapable of mapping them how else do you intend to inject extra fuel over what the standard nozzles can flow to produce extra power? You are happy to fit bigger nozzles to petrol cars so whats the difference? Why do you feel the need to have to fit uprated nozzles in new injector bodies for?
Uprated PD170 nozzles from Bosio are called PPD race and back in 2009 they where 543 euro plus VAT plus fitting to your standard PD170 injectors that you need to supply. New injectors are not need to have uprated nozzles fitted. Nozzles fitting and spray testing was 100 euro plus VAT and postage 35 euro plus VAT.

This is simply amazing. Only question is why? Surely the cost, insurance, etc etc will never be recovered as it would by buying an S3, RS3 or something designed to be that hot from birth.

I want a project, something different.. Yes might be money being chucked out to get it that powerful but its for personal satisfaction. I'm only asking for help from the people who tune tdi's this way, not asking should I. If I wanted an s3 I'd buy one but I'm after an a3 tdi :)

Your tuned diesel may achieve much better MPG then an S3 but think of the THOUSANDS your gonna spend getting it to the performance levels you speak of. That and much increased maintainance and insurance costs similar to or higher then an S3 will easily outweigh any savings you make on fuel economy.
