On the way down to AITP the speedo decided to give up the ghost of the misus A3, i just thought it'll be the sensor in the gearbox....no biggy...but......

on the way back the fuel gauge decided to pack up too!!!! both were coming on intermittently, the fuel gauge read half a tank then just went flat and the fuel light came on about 10 miles from home...we know theres pletny of fuel left in it so its left me scratching my head

i need to get vagcom on it when i get home ideally....has anyone else had any issues like this? im hoping it isnt going to be a 'send the clocks off job'

    Hmmmm - weird.....

Not a wiring issue somewhere? But the speedo packing in completely is weird.

I only just made it home mate, it could be worse....

    Well....

I've had a clunking and banging for a while, which eventually after changing all the suspension components pretty much, turns out to be NS inner and OS outer CV joints - both shagged.

So I thought, bugger it, it'll be OK - it's only 250 miles.

Then made the mistake of fitting my MBC and upping the boost. Brought the torque up from peaks of 245 to peaks of 316 ft/lbs. And I think that then completely shagged it.

It was fine getting there - but not on the way back.

Stopped in the first services on the M6 (100 miles to go) and it started grinding, creaking and squealing (all bad noises). Thought sod it, i'll try and get her home. So I did.

It made it, but getting off the motorway, the car didn't want to turn from where the joint was so shot by this point. The last 2 tight turns into my road and onto the drive finally killed it, and also the extra pressure required from the PAS pump has split a weak spot in the PAS hose that goes from the pump to the rack.

    Arse.

My 2 new complete shafts should be here tomorrow, and will order a hose from Audi today @ £62 inc.

Animal, fuel sender under the back seat. Give it a clean first or the part can be replaced £35-£45 iirc

well at least the main thing is you know what is wrong...... and you have the parts on their way, what do you think will go next? we taking bets :)

cheers mate..... i'll vag it tonight and clean up that sensor, just bit of coincidence that both should decide to go together dont you think?

How easy is the gearbox sensor to remove for the speedo?

Cheers Nilz, after reading the liks Fins posted im gonna vag it when i get home, clean that sender and check the wiring under the battery box aswell as the 10 amp fuse - it was the speedo that went first though so why would the fuel sensor be linked? i dont get it :(

Woteva Trevor, I know which I'd rather be :p

If Tim hasn't said this already, the fuel gage keeps going from 0ml, 15ml, 40ml, 65ml then back down to 0 again and so on, so its not staying on zero all the time - didnt know whether this info would make a difference!?

Anyway, thank you to everyone who has helped Tim with advice of modification/issues with my car, it is muchly appreciated on my part :)

Also thank you to Tim for doing the work :)

right, ive took the battery box out and undone/sanded/refitted all three earth points..... had a go at the fuel sensor but unsure if i should or how i am supposed to undo the fuel pipes? if anyone can help..dont wana mess unless i know what im doin - still need to vag it although not expecting anything coming up....ive also checked all the fuses

worth noting that the speedo worked for a few miles on the return trip and then stopped again...it also works now but fully expect it to stop working again soon

does anyone know how to get to the speed sensor in the gearbox? above or below

    ok heres the code

    VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.0
    Monday, 09 August 2010, 20:41:37:0
    Control Module Part Number: 8L0 920 980 E
    Component and/or Version: AB-KOMBIINSTR. VDO D12
    Software Coding: 00444
    Work Shop Code: WSC 00853
    Additional Info: WAUZZZ8LZ1A011873 AUZ7Z0Y1526439
    1 Fault Found:
    00771 - Fuel Level Sensor (G)
30-00 - Open or Short to Plus

this wont clear and also flagged along with implausable signal intermittent to speedo...that cleared though

just reada thread about someone on here who replaced everything including the clocks only to find the problem being a split wire near the starter motor!! cant work that out as the speedo loom appears to go up behing the air box and channel'd below the wiper motor

seems a bit of a coincidence that both have gone togther

just unclipped mine , you push a slide bit in at the opposite side to the pipe and it releases them.

getting the sender out looked almost imposible the top bit comes away with a spring inbetween the top and bottom but could I hell as like get the unit out. Think I found the level sensor attached to the side of the unit but had to give in as I was due somewhere :(

bit in the tank seems bigger than the hole :( my tank is just about 1/2 full so might try when its almost empty, car stinks of petrol now and I got quite light headed :)

i just used a small screwdriver the bit you push is about 1mm deep and goes most of the way round the front of the connector.

ok If that sorts that bit you can tell me how to get the sender out lol its going to be another 2 weeks before my tanks empty and im not trying again with if 1/2 full.

only upside was I had to treat the leather to get rid of the petrol smell :)

    hi there,

got the same issue, with my A6 avant, as per VAG-Com scan:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Address 17: Instruments Labels: 4B0-920-xxx-17.lbl
    Part No: 4B0 920 980 H
    Component: C5-KOMBIINSTR. VDO D07
    Coding: 00462
    Shop #: WSC 00058
    VCID: 2A548F17FC97
    Component: AUZ7Z0X1173590
    ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ AUZ7Z0X1173590
    1 Fault Found:
    00771 - Fuel Level Sensor (G)
30-10 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent

in the past there have been hugh issues with the fuel senders across some of the VAG range. In fact there was a recall in the *US* regarding fuel senders.. do a search..

anyway, going to attempt to either clean / replace my fuel sender. Here's some good links which will hopefully be of some use:

    HTH, wish me luck!
