    Just placed my order this morning for a :

    A3 Saloon 1.4 TFSi COD S Line S Tronic in Ice Silver with options of :

    * Comfort Pack
    * Fine Nappa Leather
    * SD Card
    * Audi Sound System
    * Electric Folding Mirrors
    * Hill Hold Assist
    * Interior Light Pack
    * Tyre Pressure Monitor
    * 5 Year Warranty

    Expected delivery is late September / early October.

    I wondered if I should wait for the 150PS diesel with S Tronic which is not available to order as a Saloon until November but after test driving a Golf GT 1.4 ACT yesterday was very impressed with this engine and with the review that Moonlight has given his 1.4 TFSi COD, I decided the petrol is what I needed as my annual mileage never exceeds 8k. Granted it can not compete with the in gear torque of the diesel but it is quieter, cheaper to purchase and for a petrol is very economical. I averaged 39 mpg on my test drive which was mostly non dual carriageway with some brisk acceleration in the Sport mode.

    Congratulations - I think you're the first I've seen on the board to order one!

    How did you rate it compared to your 170bhp Passat in terms of acceleration, Broadstraik?

    Thank you. I think you're right, I have not seen any other order on the forum for a saloon yet.

    I found the acceleration very comparable from standing start, the 0-62 mph time for my current car is 8.6 secs and for the 1.4 COD is 8.4 secs but my current car has 350nm of torque versus 250nm for the new one but would have only got 320nm on the 150PS diesel. As I have said the petrol cannot compete with the diesel for in gear acceleration due to the greater torque but overall I am happy with my choice. The A3 is also nearly 15% lighter so felt quick to my current car.

    Congratulations as well.

    May I ask how you found access to the boot was like?

    I prefer hatchbacks but have to admit the saloon is very attractive.

    Thanks.

    Still not seen a saloon in the flesh, my dealer has been promised a German model for display in their showroom at the end of next month.

    I prefer a saloon although I have had hatchbacks, the saloon has a greater load capacity without seats folded and I only rarely have to carry large loads so will not often need to fold the rear seats down. I have ordered roof bars and cycle carriers to carry my bikes which will be better than only being able to carry one bike in the back of my Passat with the rear seats down and no rear passengers.

    Just about to order very similar spec to yours Broadstraik, I was hoping the COD would be available in manual too but understand that wont be available till the end of the year, just wondered if you were able to negotiate any discount with your order as I remember the initial Sportback A3 release included free Sat Navs not sure whether to commit now or wait for the full launch? Great looking car though :) Cant wait to get behind the wheel of one...Just wish the S Line didn't cost so much more than the Sport!

    Not building up my hopes of it arriving any earlier than the end of September, after all that is only 10 weeks away and the factory apparently closes for 3 weeks for summer holidays. I have gone for 5 years warranty so if I do have any problems then Audi should be paying for them!!

    Yes, your right, the manual COD is open for orders in November. I managed to get £1,150 off the list price of £30,640 which is about 3.75%. Orange Wheels offered about £1,280 and Drive the Deal only £959 so happy with the discount my dealer gave me and I prefer to deal with the local dealer if the price is right. It seems impossible to test drive a A3 1.4 TFSi COD but have you tried the Golf GT with 1.4 ACT. That is what I tried yesterday in manual and it was a cracking drive. I suppose the S Line has some features I am not that worried about but overall it is a good package and I like the exterior/interior tweaks it includes.

    Correct, the salesman was Fraser Edward. I bought my current Passat and previous A4 Quattro from them too.

    Still undecided whether to go for the S tronic in the petrol, or diesel manual, the trade mags are split in the their opinions of the merits of each which doesn't help, I guess my only concern with the 1.4 COD is whether its willing & able in that 50mph to 80mph range which my current A6 is so good at, love the look and size of it and its encouraging Broadstraik that you were able to negotiate a little discount on it already...Decisions, Decisions..:)

    Like others have said, you need to drive the models you are interested in for yourself before making up your mind. Coming from a DSG, I was always likely to go for the S Tronic. I think the petrol would struggle to match the diesel in the 50-80 mph sprint without changing gear. In the diesel this would be achieved effortlessly without necessarily needing to change down. In the petrol with S Tronic with the kick down or using the paddles this not a huge deal as the gear changes are so smooth and quick. So this is a slight compromise on the diesel here but it is about £1,500 cheaper to buy, is a lot quieter and fuel economy wise is not far off the diesel and petrol is about 5p a litre cheaper too.

    Yes, I am happy with discount I managed given the saloon has only just been launched.

    Yes, I have had no problems dealing with the sales guys there although I have had a few disagreements with the VW service department. I also managed to get a free set of rubber mats for the winter and 5% off a set of winter wheels/tyres and roof bars and bike carriers but a free interior light pack was a good freebie. Yes, roll on delivery day!
