if you liked the 130bhp, no doubt you will love the 150 bhp unit.

Unsure if a 10 minute drive will get the diesels to up to operating temperature. Think it used to take mine around 15 mins to reach 90c. For such a short journey, I am assuming you do more personal mileage otherwise you will encounter DPF regen issues, something which does not occur in older diesels.

1.4tfsi C.O.D. 140ps Is 85 kg lighter than 2.0 deisel 150ps, which is partly why is quicker (slightly) to 60 mph, will also help handling slightly, I have driven the 2.0 diesel twice and really like it and would more then happily have one.
I currently have a petrol and last car was a diesel so have no particular loyalty to either.
But the math for me said : 4 years at 14000 miles per year was a bit cheaper taking every thing into account than a 2.0 litre diesel and is slightly quicker and I have found the petrol more fun the my old diesel although is slightly slower than previous diesel.
So C.O.D. edged it slightly on both counts for me.
Not so much on this forum, as so much info, people will tend to make informed decisions, but generally I think a lot of people will default to the 2 ltr diesel 150 ps and ignor the C.O.D as headline figures (not audi's fault as standard test is floored) suggest the diesel is the cost efficient option for medium to higher mileage and its not that clear cut in reality. And tradionally a 1.4 petrol would be a budget, low powered engine, girlfriend had a 1.4 ford escort years ago, and engine was badly under powered and that perception sticks I think.
it's a nice choice to have, both great options.

Question - when the car calculates the theoretical "range" of the car how does it do so? Does it base in on the avg MPG stored in computer 2? (long storage). Just ask as when I picked my car up on Friday, it had is regulatory 1/2 tank, which was fine. Stated Range as 140miles remaining. OK fine. Filled up and reset the computers, and only stated a max range of 370 miles. Even if I only managed 35mpg, this would equate to 395 miles with a 50 Litre (11gallon tank)!. Or was it because I only cleared the computers after filling? (So used previous figures when the dealership were doing PDI?). I'm just curious really, as I know that1. You'll never get near the quoted figure on mpg2. It will take a while for the engine to bed in (so you gain a little as the mileage increases)3. Depends on driving style etc...

Previous Audis have taken the average MPG for the last 30 miles or so and extrapolated for the new tank based upon fuel gauge estimate of how much was put in. Can't imagine the new ones would be much different.

Since car was new when you filled up then I would guess it didn't have much real data to go on: just short journeys as its loaded from train to boat to transporter.

Right I'll add my two pennies worth. After the initial fill up (on top of the half tank on collection)..First TankEstimated Range 380 milesActual Range (till fuel warning light)406Average DIS mileage (comp 2) 47.5Actual Mileage (based on litres used/distance)43.3(8.8% difference)Will be interesting to see how the figures change as the engine loosens up (only has 450 miles on the clock so far!), and whether the DIS/Actual mileage gets closer.

I am only tracking displayed average vs actual average MPG for mine as the DIS is only an approximation. I would expect the % difference between DIS calculated tank average MPG and actual MPG from garage fuel pump & odometer would not change much over time. The actual numbers would, based upon driving style, aircon use and engine loosening up, but % difference should remain fairly similar. Mine is currently over-reading by about 7% and once I have a bank of data, I plan to change the correction factor in VCDS as I did for my 8L (if I can find out where that correction factor is stored in the 8V long-coding). IIRC Audi garages would only consider changing it if it was out by more than 10%.

Too many variables to track estimated range at full tank vs actual range achieved.

unfortunately I don't have a way to access the VCDS software, but I will keep a track of the figures anyway.

Once you know what you want to change, check the VCDS forum on here and the map function to find forum members in your area with VCDS. Am sure one will help you out.

I've just used my first full tank. The warning light has just come on, and the car says 55 miles still in the tank.

It did about 500 miles before the warning light came on.

it's pretty much the same number of miles that my A4 B8 2.0 TDI does to a tank, although with the smaller tank in the 8V, it means it costs less to fill it up :)

Think I need to calm my right foot down a bit to get some better mileage... it's how I justified buying the car anyway!

I've literally just done my first full tank down to as far as I'd ever go. I got 471 miles with 25miles remaining on the DIS, average on the display was 47.5 mpg, it took 45.28 litres to fill it back to full, so 45.28 litres is 9.97 gallons, works out about 47.2mpg, DIS is pretty close for me. I have to say I'm impressed with my fuel consumption to say it's a 1.2 TFSi with only 1400miles on clock, hopefully it'll getup to 50mpg with a few more miles on the engine.

Well my first long drive (about 120 miles) as yielded an average mpg of 58.6 (according to the DIS). Will see what I get on the return journey. That was cruising at 70 with the cruise control.

For all you fuel consumption researchers,

    https://www.fuelly.com

Seems like a good website. Might start doing this for my new S3 if March ever comes :s

Just completed the same trip again but this time upped the motorway mph around 2-3mph in France and UK, added another 80kg of weight with an extra passenger, battled a 15- 20mph headwind on the way out and threw in a few additional short 1-2 mile journeys while in France and still returned an average mpg of 53mpg

Great figures Daveotto, I just wish i could somewhere close to it. My car has only just hit 2000km but the best I'm getting is about 7.5l/100km or close 31MPG. Yes its a 1.8L petrol and i did by that car for some fun but the stop start commute into work is killing my consumption. I hope it gets better once it frees up.

Doing some motorway driving this weekend, hoping my mpg goes up nicely from my commuting average (45 - 50 depending on the day!)

Thanks, is an easy relatively traffic free route if you time it right of two motorway sections 75 and 60 miles and another 25 mile A road section with a mile or two section through the euro tunnel terminal so can just set the cruise control and she just purrs along effortlessly, don't think I will get anything better unless I slow down even after a few more thousand miles bedding in.

Not sure of your route length etc. but if only a short trip in traffic not sure you will get to much more out of a 1.8TFSI

Wow - that is really decent mpg. What kind of driving is that and how many miles are on your car? I presume that is the MPG over the tanks of fuel you've put in so far?

Have you tested the performance at all in those figures?

Very interested in this as you are the first person to mention S-Tronic S3 SB MPG specifically, and that's what I have ordered.

If I get 30mpg out of my S3 when it comes I'd be happy, as I've only just managed 38 over 6000 miles on my A4 TDI!

    but let's face, you don't buy a S3 for mpg's!:icon_thumright:

The 42.1mpg was with a passenger on the way to ADI, a full boot and a full tank of fuel. At 43.7mpg the car had 4 lights on the gauge and it was on a 15 mile drive to work at a steady 60mph.

The mileage on our S3 Sportback so far is just over 1,500.

Haven't really tested the performance yet, waiting until i go to the Nurburgring next year. The fuel i use is Shell V-Power.

So what would you say your average range is out of a tank for the S3 SB?

that's excellent. ive ordered the manual but if I get over 30mph ill be happy. my Peugeot 307xsi gets 31mph and im rarely driving it hard so that's poor and my fiesta 1998 1.25 does about 40mpg around town doing short trips which is good

Audi has made big progress recently on there petrol engines with MPG increasing and still improving on performance.
They seam to manage to keep the pertrol engines light, so helps number stack up really well, especially as S3 is really a performance car, where MPG is less of a priority.

Pleased to report on a recent trip (about 40 miles or), car reported via DIS an mpg of 60.6! Whilst this might not be accurate, its still impressive considering it has only done just over 1000 miles at that point!

Best I've had out my car is 6L per 100Km or 39.2 MPG , with most of this being freeway driving. I have noticed that its freeing up slowly but i just wish i could get close to the numbers i have seen on here around the 50MPG. The car has now just hit 3000km and i only use BP or Shell 98.

Got 37.3mpg on the way to work today. I used to own an A3 2.0TDI 140BHP and got it remapped to 170BHP, the most i got out of that car was 74.3mpg, who says you can't get the manufacturers figures.
