As some of you may have read in my previous post the wifes A3 has an issue which im now faily sure is the gearbox.

My question is which would be more cost efficient, get the existing box stripped & rebuilt or buy a recon/replacement?

Have any of you had one rebuilt and can recommend someone (Pref in the south east - West sussex ideally!)

    Its a '00 1.8T petrol & 5 speed not 6.

Hi mate sorry to hear of your troubles. Just thought id give you my opinion as i had a gearbox go and know how exspensive it can be!

Getting your gearbox refurbed is going to cost the best part of £600 and maybe more with a decent warrenty. So it depends if you are planning on keeping the car really, as ideally you could get one off the ebay or asn classifieds from a car being broken and get it done cheap and sell on.

And as for recommending a repitable company in east sussex i would say shop around on the web and phone a few and try to price them off at eachother.

    Good luck whatevere you decide.

i'd get a 6 speed if i were you, better economy on a run !

buy second hand with some sort of gaurentee, have you drained the gearbox oil and looked for filings? it could be ok, you wont know until you take it off and it has to come off regardless of what you choose to do!

I'm in West Sussex too - I went to a really nice VAG specialist in East Grinstead on Saturday, and enquired about the labour charge of a gearbox change as I'm getting crunches in 2nd and may not be able to solve them. They quoted me £350.00 in labour to swap the 'box over - Which is 7 hours book time, although it allegedly takes them slightly longer. If you can pick one up for £150-200 then it'll work out slightly cheaper than having your existing box rebuilt.

i had a selector fork go on mine and had that rebuilt for a little over £300. I assume that they didnt have to take it apart entirely for that price. That price doesnt include taking it out and back in again though

    Thanks for the replies
You learn something new everyday, its a pre-facelift yr2000 - I'll check the numbers when I get some daylight.

I've been recommended a local gearbox builder by a friend whos garage owner, apparently fairly familiar with quattro's & 4-motions etc.
If I can get the problem properly identified and and sorted for below £600 I'd be happy - the other alternative is sell the car with the (probably) knackered box at a heavily knocked down price - which I'd rather not do.

Appreciate the replies - of all the forums I've used this is easily one of the most helpful.
