Anyone with a glacier white 3 door 8v in the West Midlands today? Saw them filling up at a shell garage on my way to work and got all excited about mine :D

    Was it anyone on here?

Wasn't me, but I have seen so many 8V sportbacks going up and down the M3, mostly grey I might add! The majority also seem to be sports.

How can you tell they are a sport as they whizz past you? The only exterior clue I know about is the single/dual exhaust

No s-line badges ;) and also sports don't have xenons unless added as an extra :)

Yep, and the lack of LED lights on the rear when they've gone past me.

How can you tell if they're sport or SE (possibly with upgraded wheels)?

Also, I thought the number of exhausts only varied by engine, not trim level? (1 for the smallest petrol and diesel, 4 for S3, 2 for everything else)

That is a little trickier, but look for chrome trim around the windows on the sport, as opposed to black on the SE. It is harder to differentiate those two.

Ah, of course, yes. I must admit when I see one zooming past about the only things I notice are colour, headlights and number of doors.

Yeh, number of exhausts isn't affected by trim level. You could also look for front fogs on the sport. I'll be having a sport trim with the Xenon lights, wonder how many people I'll fool :p

Wheels/rims are the easy/normal give away for me to tell the difference between s-line, sport & SE. So Cemerson, your xenons will not be fooling me!!! :) I would admit telling the difference between SE and a sport will get more difficult if the SE spec has upgraded wheels that the sport gets as standard. I would probably consider the overall styling to tell the difference between the sport and SE trim types. Side on view will make it easier to work out. I find myself looking at the number of exhausts to determine engine/fuel type. Play the guessing game of what fuel type and engine someone has, if chosen to deselect the exterior badges. I know, quite sad!!! lol

Back to the original post - it was not me Grant!

Unfortunately for me I have now spotted locally to me an A3 (3dr) in sline trim and an A3 Sportback sline both in Amalfi white. One Sportback sport and Sportback Sline in glacier white. Not forgetting a couple of Sportbacks sline in Daytona. There was me thinking Daytona was the most popular along with glacier.

I still think the A3 and A3 Sportbacks are still rare despite seeing all those other ones.

Yeah mine is a de-badged 1.4 S-line with twin exhausts..... pretty easy to spot the s-line trim, but much harder to work out the engine :search:

About the exhausts, couldn't have explained it better myself - in fact, I didn't!
i knew I'd get in trouble about the exhaust comment.

Cemerson, you won't fool anyone on here about disguising the status of your car!... Haha.. Unless you find some s-line stickers!

Heh, no... but de-badging is trendy these days so you never know :p I'd like to see you get a good look at what wheels I have when they are turning as fast as they will though...

It's easy from the side, just look for the front spoiler side vent :

    No vent = Sport / SE ;)

MJCourtney - did you de-badge the S-line yourself or did the garage do it before you picked up?

I'm thinking of doing that with mine when i get it because im not keen on the look of the S-line badge on the side of the car, i think it looks like an indicator.

I only have it de-badged on the rear, which was a factory option. I still have the S-line badges on the sides. I don't think it would be hard to remove them yourself, a hair dryer and some gentle persuasion should loosen the adhesive pad i'm sure.

Just followed a very nice looking Scuba Blue Sportback 8V out of Loughborough (only the second one I've seen), and spent a while trying to figure out if it was SE or Sport (can easily tell it wasn't S-line from the lower rear bumper) - took a while! It was SE in the end, no chrome around the windows on the sides

Just past a A3 sportback Daytona grey 8v 13 plate, not a clue what trim it was! One thing did puzzle me, didn't notice any DRLs. However it's pretty sunny here in Berkshire, and may not have had xenons

DRLs are on all trim levels - they are a legal requirement. Only the xenons have the 'eyebrow' ones though.

Rear roof spoiler is different on the S-Line models

Personally dont understand why people choose the basic model and send big bucks on making it look like another trim level, maybe just my way of thinking.....

Like what? Xenons? Because the Xenons added to sport is about half the cost of upgrading to S-line, and that's including the adaptive function as well which the S-line doesn't come with unless you pay even more

Yes it sure does ! Shouldn't be too hard to get them off either in all fairness as they wouldn't of been on there too long :) hair dryer and dental floss ;) what you reckon I should use to get the excess glue off?

You can get s line badges on eBay for about £7. Thinking of getting one for my front grill to make it obvious from the front that mine is s line

Will do, only problem would be in bolt length, maye a kind/lucky owner could measure grill thickness. But assume item elow would be fine a so many off them have been sold

Yeh, I asked for the engine technology to be removed, but my dealer didn't bother speccing it - he says they can do it easily enough during PDI, and people often change their mind. As it happened, I did change my mind! I don't mind the TDI being on there, just didn't want 2.0 if that was going to be there too. Don't know why, weird preference!

You only get engine technology designation now and not engine size so it's TDI or TFSI on the A3. My current car has 1.4T. I opted to not have designation but kept model number but now thinking I might want it removed to just keep the BMW tailgaters guessing A3 or A6 for a few seconds more!

On the tailgate I just have the A3 and TDI badges and S-Line on the wings, but the way it's driven I don't think people have the time to look a the badge unless it's stopped or in slow traffic..... Stupidly people try to race my wife from traffic lights, roundabouts and on the dual carriageway but she can hold her own and more up to the speed limits, the car can pull very hard and accelerate quick..

That is the only annoying thing about driving an AUDI - the wannabe racers, tailgaters and white van men. My usual approach, when it is safe to do so and I can be bothered, is to kick down for a couple of hundred yards and then pull back over to the inside lane and ease off the gas as if to say I have got the power if needed but I am not stupid and let them race past if they want
