As the title says, my drivers door sounds like a bag of broken plates when swung shut.

The electric window works perfectly, so it is safe to rule that out.

    What could it be?

Views and opinions welcomed and appreciated.

My driver's door used to rattle with a very similar, metalic-like, sound. It turned out to be one of the large bolts (16) that hold the side reinforcement bar (5) was lose - 1 minute later the noise was gone. See vagcat.com for a diagram of the door.

Without actually removing the interior door card and checking it, it's difficult to diagnose it further though. Try checking the link above for a diagram of the door cards and how to take them off for further ideas.

Mine used to rattle too. I took the door card off and had a look and found loads of shards of glass sitting in the bottom of the door where the passenger side window had obviously been smashed in the past.

You need to get the door card off and take a look mate.

Guys... Thanks you all very much for the informative AND funny info. To say I am impressed is an understatement.

I am leaving to go to kent now. I will post back once I have had the door card off and sorted the problem as found.

No cheese required my door doesn't squeek... But if it did only the very best "m&s/tesco finest selection" will do for my mouse trap. LMAO.

Did you know that mice can't actually eat cheese. It gives then diarrhoea. The best substance to catch one is grated chocolate.

I would definately check the bolts at either end of the door first to check they are not loose, mine were which causes the side impact bars to rattle when you shut the door...

I'd check here first before removing the door card...

Solved... Turns out it was the side impact bar bolts... I didn't need to take the door card off after all.

    Thanks all.

I also managed to run a full scan with vag-com; I now know that the car most probably needs a new central convenience module. That would explain the dodgy alarm/key remote and the ignition not disabling the alarm.

    Or does it?
