A3 2lt Tdi, do they share they same BLB A4 troubles?

Hi guys quick query, would an 04 2lt Tdi engined A3 share the same engine troubles that the A4 does, ie Chain driven oil pump failure costing big bucks?

How old are you talking ?

The BKD 140bhp engine does not suffer from that problem although the 170bhp has been known to.

The early BKD engines (mainly 2004 vintage) suffered from porous head problems but later engines are mainly ok.

Usual turbo pipe leakages and turbo whine prevail !

I'm not sure but think it's late 04, surely if the head has not went by now it should be ok? Is there any way of checking it's had the head replaced or has the right one?

You're probably correct but a sign of the problem is coolant loss without an apparent leak. Also white smoke from the exhaust and poor starting from cold.

If you remove the engine cover the head number will be visible under the fuel pipes. Suffix 'A' had a lot of problems, suffix 'B' had a few problems and suffix 'C' had no problems.

That's obviously a generalisation but gives you a good indication.
