    Hi,
newbie here! wife has just got a 06 a3 8p, however came with a chorus tape head unit, although it has cd changer control. is the changer wire already installed? or would be easier to get a concert cd player head unit ? i have taken the stereo out and the the 3 horizontal plug are all in.
any help / advice greatly appreiciated.

Check the label on top of the unit & see if the cd wires are actually wired into the relevant plug already mate & this should determine if its prewired ready for a changer, IMHO.

thanks - just had a check - the top plug is all in one but doesn't have any wires going into the "cd section" so not pre wired then! how easy would it be to fit the wires into the plug. or would say a concert cd head unit work, (plug and play)?

Sorry forgot to say, welcome to the site.

If you can get changer with prewired loom attached then might be a plugnpray solution, but even so its not exactly a massive job to install, have you considered maybe an upgrade to maybe a newer unit with mp3 compatibility or you looking for cheapest method ideally, woud a sat nav etc install be of interest?

To upgrade to a newer unit with MP3 such as a concert II+ would require a double din conversion from chorus II.

Also to add a CD changer to an A3 requires a new glovebox as the existing one will not take a CD changer.

Isnt the storage area where the changer would sit in his current glovebox the same width as the cd changer version, if so a dremel would resolve that issue, given the location & its not visible, I'm sure a modded glovebox would save him a fair few pennies here, then just epoxy the unit in position or even some sikaflex would hold that fast, so road vibrations shouldnt affect it, just one idea of course to save more money.

No it doesn't fit, the airbag hole wether fitted or not is on the right and blocks the CD changer, the CD changer version of the glovebox has the airbag switch in the middle to allow the CD changer to move fully to the right. There is a huge AC unit behind the glovebox which will stop the CD changer going back into the glovebox if it is fitted to an original glovebox without the CD option.

I guess if your not bothered about the look and want to make a pigs ear of it it wouldn't matter.
