i have a 99 110bhp afn facelift avant.
lately i have noticed that when driviving at normal motorway speeds, when i accelerate it puts out a lot of black smoke.
i know there will be a certain amount from the turbo, but lately it seems a bit excessive.
its running fine at the moment but i am just a bit concerned as to what might be causing this.
does anyone have any ideas?
it has 160k on the engine

Mine did this when it had a boost leak and was overfuelling as a result.
boost leak could be heard with windows down when driving alon narrow roads [echo off parked cars]
turned out to be hole in back of intercooler - WTF?
can you run VCDS? - having said that I got no codes for mine, just high fuel consumption.

cheers,
dont have access to vcds myself, but i am getting the timing belt done next friday so might get the mechanic to plug it in and check.
did you have to change the intercooler or can it be repaired.

I just got used intercooler £30 from ebay breaker -
tricky to fit without pulling the front end out into 'service position' but just possible

if possible, let me know how many hours labour the timing belt takes, got to do mine this month

not sure on the labour end of things, but the guy that is doing it specialises in audi/vag/bmw/merc work.
350 euro to supply and fit including the water pump and fresh coolant

Im getting my timing belt done along wit water stop and all pullys and idlers next week and been quoted 280 for everything which I thought was reasonable

where abouts you getting it done? I keep getting quoted £350...

I confirmed the booking of my car today for the timing belt and the mechanic tells me I don't need to change the water pump on the AFN
Engine because it's not driven by the timing belt
Can anyone confirm this for me
Would hate to be thinking about it all the time and wondering

Cheers for that, what would I do without the wealth of experience
And nice people on this forum:respekt:
