    Hi all

Just a quick question, I've got a 1.8T on order and was wondering if I should be using 99 Octane petrol when it turns up?

    Thanks in advance!

    James

Certainly wont hurt, dont think its a must , unless your chipped of course. Your MPG and performance will be better with it,

Thanks for that! If it gives me more MPG and better performance then it seems like a must to me!

experiment and see if it's worth it. on my old 1.6 it was giving me a 10% increase in fuel economy for 6% increase in price, as well as making the car more responsive. in my 2.0T i'm still getting used to the power so not noticed a difference in power but it definitely gives me a noticable improvement in fuel economy. we're talking 20% or so.

i can second that i always use super in my car and its a 1.6 and its much better on fuel and runs much better / cleaner so yeah its worth doing for the extra cost i use bp ultimate as there is a garage right by my work

Thats my next question, may sound daft but is BP, Shell petrol better than your cheaper Tesco petrol?

    BP is 97 RON
V-Power and Momentum from Tesco are both 99 RON.

there's some debate over whether V-Power is actually better than Momentum. i personally don't feel there's very much in it so the cheaper Momentum is what i go for when i'm near my local Tesco, otherwise i always put V-Power in by my gym.

again just experiment and see how you get on.

you should always use the premium fuels... better for you engine.. better fuel economy... and faster... im never sure but i aalways use v-power.. something tells me shell put more effort into fuel than a supermarket that specialise in rottisserie chickens..

If you believe the press you should avoid supermarket fuels as the reason they are cheaper is that they don't contain all the cleaning additives found in shell etc. No idea if that's factually correct but I've read it on more than one occasion.

Interestingly I started using shell power in my 2.0T S3 and didn't really notice any improvement in performance or mpg. Might try 95 RON next time to see if I notice a degradation going the other way.

I use v-power. I've noticed improved mpg. Not really any performance increases though, I don't think.

I used to use normal 95 ron in my BMW 330ci and every now and then used to use v-power.... didn't notice much difference with MPG but car seemed a bit more responsive, if anything the MPG went down.....

With my S3, I reckon Audi filled it up with half a tank of 95 petrol because when it eventually ran out I filled up with v-power....and I noticed a a much more responsive acceleration and a better improvment in MPG.....(depending on how heavy my foot is :( )

I do notice when I do short sprints bursts that the petrol does decrease quite rapidly with V-power!

I've noticed that with petrol full stop. 95, 97 and 99.

I'm still in shock how quickly it goes down when driving with a heavy foot.
Filled up the tank to the brim last week with v-power (£63) and used just under quarter of the tank on 100 miles of quite gentle urban driving. For the next 40-50 miles I tore around some dual carriage ways etc and now i'm just below half a tank left.

Gentle driving is where I notice the improved mpg. When pushing the car the fuel consumption pretty much seems the same regardless of RON.

I'm a recent convert to 98 from 95, having never owned a car new enough before now to worry about what goes in it. If/when I find 99 I'll give it a go.

I read somewhere, probably on here than when switching between fuels octanes, that it takes a while for the ECU to respond to the new fuel - e.g. a couple of tanks or alternatively resetting the ECU?

If you want better performance from your fuel but want to save costs i have a tip..

Only fill the car up to half full with 95 Ron. That way the weight saving gives better performance and the fuel cost is cheaper.. hehe

I just reset the ECU (battery disconnect for 20mins or so).

or you could do what i do and fill your tank half with V-Power :p. you can't really argue with a 20% increase in fuel economy for a 6% increase in price.

Me and my bro drive the same cars and he doesn't fill up with v-power. I can feel a difference driving his compared to mine.

6 months on, my exhaust is still not sooty, i run my finger inside and still comes out clean. I think v-power burns better and it has detergents that clean the injectors. His exhaust is a bit sooty and my revs seem to rise a bit faster which might explain the poor mpg people get when flooring them

My exhaust is black as night and I only use V-power too. Mine is probably down to short journeys though, at least thats what Audi tells me.

My exhaust is disgusting also with V-power. I do short journeys too so maybe there is something to that.

V-Power for me improves responsivness but not necessarily fuel efficiency. Never tried BP Ultimate or Tescos thingy!

I only use v-power and my exhaust is sooty, my journey is 200 miles each way on motorways. At legal motorway speeds i get around 5 mpg better with v-power.

Of course fuel consumption is gonna bad with either Octane when your pushing it! Possibly even worse with 99

What's the fuel tank capacity on the 3.2 then, or do you pay about 10p a litre more than me?

In fact, would be interested to hear what people are paying for their super unleaded.
My closest shell sells v-power at 1.21p per litre.

Well obviously! I just didn't realise that it was going to be twice as bad, or worse.

    Why?

That shell is my closest, just a 2min blast down the north circ. After filling up i've gotta drive pretty much all the way up to gants hill to flippin' turn around to go home though.

You always lived around east then?

Spent quite a lot of time around those parts. Bought my first ever car from woodford, and enjoyed some fine back row moments in the old gants hill cinema!

Yeah do that mate. I'll be the craig david looking one, in a silver 06 plate A3, nodding my head to tinny sounds coming from a symphony stereo.
