I just averaged ~23 mpg on my last fillup which was a mix of highway and city traffic. This is actual data, not the computer guessing.

What are other's getting under mixed conditions? What did the 'book' suggest the engine should get when the cars were new?

My average mpg shows at 26 on the trip computer my mate has the same car as me (a3 quattro) and he gets 32? thing is that i rarely give it the beans i mostly drive it as economically as possible. what could cause poor mpg? could this be anything to do with the maf? i don't expect the mpg to be great but from the threads I've read on here there are people with mapped s3's getting the same if not better mpg as me and mine is completely standard?

Think the weight more than anything makes the difference.

Think its largely accepted the quattro costs you anywhere between 5-10mpg.

My a3 FWD 1.8t is getting 30mpg on the motorway atm, which i think aint right, probably needs new MAF.

Talking of which, anyone used the ebay MAFs going for ~£60 ?

The S3 'Quattro' is pretty much the same as my Fwd A3 for fuel, both remapped.

    Hardly any difference at all...

Both Aprox 27-28 mpg with mixed driving...

How can you test to be sure it's the MAF?

 I'm no expert, i would of thought that if there was anything wrong with the maf, that there would be other side affects other than bag mpg. what about DV? i've noticed that the engine bogs down for the slightest moment after gear changes, apparently this is caused by the DV? pffft i'm waiting for someone to educate me.

I'm getting a **** 20ish MPG at the moment, a steep fall off from 28MPG ish (according to the DIS). I'm not panicing 'till the snow's gone though as I don't reckon that's helping it too much!

Boost leaks, vacuum leaks, maf, lambda sensors, CTS, thermostat, are the main things to check that I can think of.

Scan for fault codes to see if you have any faulty sensors as a starting point

usually to get better gas mileage there are a few things you can do to help.

inflate the tires to proper or a little higher than specified air. it will wear out the tires a little differently but it will save you gas.
changing tires to thinner tires will help a lot. if your car is running 245 then going 225 or 215 will change thing dramatically.

take out extra baggage in the trunk. things that you know you don't need to drive around with.

using lighter weight oil, where possible. its not just for sound systems anymore.

installing new power and grounding wires. remove all the smaller wires and install 00 or 0 gauge wires for power and ground. the big three as they call it.

larger battery. this will help with the cars efficiency to send more power to the spark plugs and other electrical modules in the car.

doing a tune up. basic tune ups will always help out. change out the air filter every other oil changes. change spark plugs, gap them correctly. etc...

do a dyno tune. this is the biggest help. it will recalibrate the ecu to optimize your car and not only save you gasoline but also the car will perform better. it sounds weird, I know, to get better performance and getter gas mileage at the same time. it really does work.

the last thing I can think of right now is to lose weight. if your heavy set, just go on a diet. this will do the least to help but ehh, thought I would just throw it out there.

these are all the things I have tried myself, plus more, and these are the ones that actually work. (leaving out he last one on the list this just depend on how heavy you personally are).

Some great ideas there, more for the list, im suspecting a boost leak somewhere. Slight hiss/wine from the drivers side, "pancake" maybe? Is it worth doing a full hose kit, they're pretty manky lookin.

If yes where is good value, im going to remap but only stage one maybe with an intake/filter kit

Oh and I love that no-one said easy on the right foot, clearly in the right place.

Thanks for taking the time to write up so much info.
