Hi gents

I have had my A3 for a couple months now and done about 3000 miles on it.

The other day I went to drive it (having had it running fine that morning) and it wouldnt start. PRNDS was flashing on the dash and it would simply turn over but not start.

I have taken it to an Audi specialist in my area and they ran diagnostics and a few checks and can't figure out what is wrong with it as of yet. It sometimes starts instantly and runs fine and other times it just wont.

Anyone got any ideas. It is FSH, 75k on clock and was running perfectly up until now.

Think the best thing you could do is get your car scanned for faults with vcds or similar also meantime you could check your fuses As that at least eliminates that i also think a dsg reset can be done with vcds .

Well it's been in the garage for a week and even they dont know what is wrong with it. One minute it starts and runs perfectly, the next minute you turn the key and get all the PRNDS flashing on the dash and it will turn over but not start.

As I said when started, (approx 50% of the time) it runs normally. But the other 50% it will turn over but wont start.

Might have a bit of an electrical gremlin/ poor connection in there somewhere? It was running perfect one minute and then all of a sudden this problem occurred.... we're scratching our heads. Any input appreciated

Cheers

Could a bad earth be the cause as some are in vulnerable places behind the left headlight are earth post one under the headlight (hard to see) and one further back visible just thought its worth a try

When the problem first happened last friday, on the dash it came up with a headlight warning message at the same time as the flashing PRNDS. It hasnt mentioned it since though. Might that be connected at all?

When I turn the key and have the issue it comes up with the error message 'headlight range control defective'.

On the occassion I turn the key and PRNDS isnt flashing and the car starts fine, I dont get this error message.

Thoughts?!

Well after lots of scanning, head scratching, checking of electrical connections earths etc etc we have decided to replace the Gearbox ECU / Mechatronics Control Unit.

From Audi these are silly money so am going to try a reconditioned one and will report back in a few days as to how we've got on.
