Hi, just wondering if anyone here can help me. The 3.2 that I bought a few weeks ago is starting to give me a small headache! About 2 weeks ago the MIL light came on and the engine started to run rough so I put my OBD scanner (not VAG COM) and found the fault code "p0018 generic cam/crankshaft pos. Correlation sensor A- bank 2". After clearing the DTC the engine started to run fine, all good again!! Fast forward to today, ran fine for a few hours then.... MIL light and rough running! Same DTC as before. Cleared once again and all good! Then, after a break of about 1 hour..... same again!! Cleared it once again and it's ran fine on my journey home (about 10 miles)!! Anyone here had the same kind of problems? Any common fix?

    Hmmmmm......

Those are symptoms of either a stretched timing chain, or faulty VVT solenoids. Either way, it's a £1000-2000 repair bill.

There's other stuff it could be, but either of the above sounds most likely. Have a search on the forum for issues with 3.2 and you'll see that you're not alone.

I didn't want to mention option C - "whatever you do won't make any difference despite how much cash you throw at it". Only a c*nt would let him on that option ;)

I was, but in a matey way ;)

You're not wrong though, Paddy's going to end up killing himself soon, and it'll all be Audi's fault.

Cheers dude. The only recent change is the rims - there is a thread on them. There will be another thread when the next set of rims goes on too :)

Thanks for the replies. Wouldn't the stretched chain be causing the rough running at all times? Also, it's only done it after it's been raining and after the first time it done it it ran spot on up until today. To be honest I was kind of looking forward to taking the engine out, just not after 4 weeks ownership and at 29k!!! Lol

Mine had intermittent running issues, with the engine vibrating and revs bouncing up and down. It turned out to be the solenoids.

Yeah approx £4k in with all the work done so far and still getting the 16398 Camshaft set point not reached code. I Did need the chains doing (£3k) as there was a definate rattle and doing the chains has not made the engine run any different.
Can't say the OP's problem is the same as mine or others though and up to now I've never had the MIL light on.
Most people on here use vagcom and so aren't conversant with other scanners, but the camshaft sensors are on the side of the timing chain case and are next to each other, not easy to change though as the cover needs to come off so I'd check wiring first. I did read somewhere that the plugs can be swapped round on these so maybe try that and see if the fault changes to the other sensor?
