My car has done just over 21k. It had a long life service at 10k and then was serviced again at 14k when I bought the car approved from a stealer. It it now coming up to the AVS service (indicator shows 2k to go). However, I am confused if this is the 2nd or 3rd AVS service. Even the stealer wasn't sure!

So, I talked to AmD and they said they thought it should be the 2nd one which is a major one but, because the milage is so low, I could 'get away' with doing a minor service and then doing the major service next time around. Also suggested I do the Haldex oil change.

Any sugestions?? Major or minor? AmD or Stealer (price quite similar)?

    Help!

Three services in 23k miles? I see the AVS is working well for you!
Well the minor service is basically an oil change. So the oil would have been changed at the last service, so there's no point doing just the oil again, so I would say it's due for a major service. Are you sure the AVS is accurate? Maybe they just didn't reset it correctly last time round.

personally id do the big service and get it done with, you know its been done then

    haldex requires an oil change.

    oil and filter at 40k.

    stealer/specialist is up to you.

Dearler does all my service/warranty stuff, anything else i get amd to do it.

that way i keep the FASH.

Are you sure you are on the AVS service schedule?

I've had my car since new, 1st AVS was at about 16000 miles, 2nd AVS (yesterday) was at 34700 miles.

So if your car was on AVS, it should not really be reporting it needing a service. Sounds to me like the car is on the normal 10000 mile service schedule, and perhaps its been marked up wrong in the service book.

I guess I am not sure. Just told that it's due for service when the indicator comes up. I assumed this meant it was AVS? Am I wrong?

Oh, and it's just over 3 years old (on an 02 plate). Would this be why it is due at such low milage?

If it;s 3 years old and on fixed servicing that would explain it... that's every 10,000 miles or 12 months I believe!?!?

Its confusing isn't it. It's the dealers fault really. I think they try to do good by servicing each car when they come into their possession. Same thing has happened with our Golf.

Even when cars move from dealer to dealer, they service them (usually just an oil change inspection service), completely knocking the regular 10000 mile interval or VS (variable servicing) interval out of kilter.

I think what has happened with your car is: The first owner didn't know about AVS (Audi VS), took their car in for a service at 10000 miles.

So just before you bought your car at 14K miles, the dealer serviced it. Now the question is, did the dealer put your car on 10K mile service intervals or AVS. If you take your car in they should be able to tell you. Because they can change it either way.

Now, your car is at 21K miles now and predicting service in 2K = 23K. On that basis its seems likely to me its on 10K miles servicing, because the maths kind of fits. So my guess is at 14K the dealer switched your car onto 10K per year Servicing.

But generally, I don't think you've got much to worry about. Although 21K is very low mileage for a 3.5 year old car.

    Cheers

I talked to the dealer. They say that if the servicing is indicated by the dash warning then that means it is on AVS.

That said, I don't really trust a word they say. After I confirmed that it was an S3, I asked for the cost of the service and he asked me if it was petrol or diesel!!

Al, thanks for your throughts on this one. I guess it's possible. Would they stamp the book as part of the approved used car checks? Does that count as a service?

I think I'll just wait until the indicator comes on and then worry about it then. AmD will do the major service including Haldex for £440, stealers want over £600!!

Yes I was gonna say that if it's on standard 10k service intervals it won't predict when the next service is due. It'll just tell you when it's overdue.

I wouldn't have an S3 on AVS, it needs the oil change every 10k.

Hmmm. I think you are wise to not just take the dealers word for it. Sometimes they do talk ****, usually in a kind of arrogant way.

My understanding is that all A3's and S3's warn you that the service is due. Even my old '99 A3 1.8T used to warn me, and that was on 10K servicing.

I think they usually do stamp the book as part of the used car checks/service. VW did with our Golf. So I think it does/should count as a service.

Perhaps they actually did perform all the checks required of an AVS service, but at 14K. If they did, then it shouldn't be warning you about a service yet.

Just look at my cars history. Had it since new: 1st AVS @ 16500 approx. 2nd AVS @ 34700.

The average is usually about 16000 miles between servicing on AVS, so yours should only start whinging about 28-30K, based on the last service at 14K.

Might be best just getting it a big service done anyway, with it being 3.5 yrs old. A MUST is the haldex oil change. Get that done sooner rather than later.

My car has had it's problems, MAF's, on going hesitation problem. But I don't think I could attribute it to the AVS servicing.

It passed its MOT with flying colours, servicing just passed no problems.

I think if I had my time again, I might run on 10K servicing. I guess more servicing is better than less.

Thanks guys. Looks like I am just going to have to bite the bullet and get it all done. Now I have to decide if it's worth £160 to have a full ASH, but I guess that's a whole other debate!

My Mothers A2 is on AVS and needed sevicing @ 8.5 k miles. This is all the car has covered in 2 years and since it is hardly used, the AVS shortens the servicing interval accordingly.

Yours maybe on AVS if only used on short journeys.

Thanks chaps. Will probably book in to AmD to have the big service done at the same time as the remap. Any comments on AmD for servicing? Think it will make much difference to the resale value?

I've got my S3 booked in for Inspection service this friday with AmD, and having R32 ARB's and Bilstein/Eibach suspension fitted. I think Full dealer service history isn't all that in this day and age, I would be more confident with a specialist looking after my car, especially when the warranty is out. You make the choices and possible savings, wouldn't effect resale IMO, so long as it's FSH at the end of the day.
