It can perhaps looks a bit dull under show room lights, but in natural light / sunshine it looks a lot brighter :icon_thumright:...

Yes that does look a lot better. DO you know what other colours they'll do it in. Daytona can look pretty nice.

Also, are the alloys on the Estoril blue S3 you posted standard? Most reviews of the car show it with the alloys which look like S-Line alloys to me. I prefer these instead...

Yeah, I like the alloys pictured above too ... looking on the German site these are 200 euro's extra over the standard alloys, like the S Line as you note.

They appear to be a really nice gun metal finish with polished highlights on the edges ... VERY nice !

If as the German site, we will be offered all the colours as available on the current A3, so Misano, Daytona etc as you note and then on top of these there are two exclusive colours for the S3 which are panther black and estoril blue - both crystal effect, which is like pearl tbh with lots of sparkly flek in it.

For me, misano and estoril suits the S3 best.

$200 extra isn't so bad then. I think those'll look good with Daytona. They look good full stop though.

I did ponder over this for a short while myself, thinking how good a sepang blue S3 would look.
But I just can't come to terms with spending £2,050 on paint.
Estoril is likely to be £750 and that is enough.
Plus I thought, is sepang REALLY gonna look two and a half times better than estoril and came to the answer = no !
If money was no issue, then sepang all the way ... but unfortunately it is, for me anyway :)

Wow, that Sepang is really good! Did that used to be an avaliable colour on the old S3 or was it even then a custom paint option? First time I have seen pics of that colour and it is mighty impressive.

It is in the flesh. You need to see one in sunlight to really appreciate it. Gorgeous colour.

Sepang blue is an exclusive RS colour and always has been so will have been a similar £2k option on the S3 above.

Equally, estoril blue is exclusive to the Audi S cars now so if you wanted estoril on an RS you would have to pay £2k or thereabouts, you will still have a fairly rare colour with estoril.

i have seen sepang up close and it really is amazing with lots of depth and sparkle and I hope that estoril will be a really nice shade too ... it certainly looks nice on the S6 above in the sun and its a crystal paint so will have lots of fleck so will sparkle in direct sunlight.

All the reviews have said on sale now though... which leads me to believe that they've not all guessed that. Lets hope that means it's not far away!

Interesting to note the differing strategies between VW and Audi.

New Golf Gti driving reviews are now appearing online (and very good they are too - especially for the performance pack option with that limited slip diff) - and VW opened the order books for GTi about a month ago. So that could be ordered before the press had a go in complete contrast to Audi where we have had press drives and reviews and still no order book being opened !

NB: Drive the Deal are already showing reasonable discounts on the new GTi of about £2k - hope thats an encouraging sign that we may see something similar on the S3 in due course????

    Hi Mate,

Yeah I saw the reviews of the GTi and must say it did make me stop and think for a moment ... as they were so good and raving about the car.

You read the reviews and it almost convinces you that you should buy one, as it is a very 'complete' hot hatch .. and would leave several thousand pounds in our pocket.

Weird how the GTi is available with 19" alloys whereas the S3 is 18" only .. why is that ?

Also, on the VW configurator (which I had to have a dabble with) another strange one I can't figure out or maybe its just a glitch, if you pick the 19" alloys (which do look amazing) it says you can't have the panoramic roof ???? why not ????

Think the 19" wheels effect the ride that the sunroof might flex too much ?

Yes it must be too stiff a ride for sunroof, might jolt/crack it?

I assumed S3 doesnt have 19s as they are consicous that some criticise them for being too stiff and crashy a ride?

Yeah could be that ... But then same applies across the entire range for same reason doesn't it.

i know the TT with 18's rides better than 19" but the 19's look better IMO.

re Golf yeah could be for those reasons also but they showed the motor show cars with pano roofs and 19's !

Actually Snake - at Geneva the Gti with the 19" alloys didnt have a pano roof. The Gti with the standard 18" wheels did have pano roof so that does bear out whats on their website. I dont think its clear in the pictures I posted on flickr but I have double checked my other photos and confirmed this.

Also just seeing those Geneva shots again I can see just how skinny those 19" tyres are!! must make quite a difference to ride. The few new Gti reviews I have seen so far really seem to recommend the adaptive chassis option for getting the best of both worlds.

The new S3 reviews have all said suspension is really quite good - albeit untested on British roads - although I dont recall that any of the S3 reviews mentioning them actually trying out the magnetic ride option.

Sepang is my favourite colour, nothing else comes close and I even priced it up at expense of every other option and could actually have my A3 that colour but it's simply just too mad to do it - On subject of the Golf GTi I priced a manual one up and could have the non performance pack version but the still simply prefer the A3 even with a lot less performance. (Did the round of dealers at weekend and sat in the MK6 GTi which though I am sure the MK7 has some differences convinced me of that)

    Hmmm interesting !

This is the car I had seen with 19's and pano - but I think this was from the Paris show and was a "prototype" so looks like yeah they have probably decided with the 19's in the real world the combo does not work:

Oh well, not that it matters as won't be buying a Golf, even it is getting good reviews.

Whilst the S3 is only available with 18's, the gun metal alloy design looks fantastic and I know for sure it will compliment the ride.

As for adaptive chassis control or mag ride - does not interest me.
I have the magnetic ride on my TTS and it IS harder than normal suspension and feels more suited to snooker table flat roads and race circuit driving.
Activate 'sport' mode and the car stiffens up massively and there is virtually no body roll, it is incredible.
But on real roads how many times have I used it ... less than 10 in nearly 3 years.
The car is stiff but also jittery - just not for the 'real' world.
Comfort - who buys a sports car and wants it wallowing about ?
So its in normal constantly which is where it feels just right, but it is still a bit crashy on some road surfaces (on 19's anyway).

**** the GTI man. 300bhp compared to 217bhp is all you need to know and don't get me started on the build quality you're losing out on if you downgrade to the Golf. 0-62 in 6.5 secs compared to 4.8 is laughable!

S3 is the intelligent man's choice. GTI is for the boy racer
