I'm nearing 100k miles in my 2009 automatic S5 and was considering some preventative maintenance.

I rang Audi for a quote on having the gearbox and diff oils changed, along with the filters, only to be told that they were sealed units that don't get serviced...

Is this correct? I've also had a local VAG specialist garage say the same.

I really don't fancy a new gearbox down the line should the worst happen and can't see the problem with a simple ATF oil and filter change.

Any help would be appreciated!

That's what I thought too. I don't want the life of the gearbox determined by poor oil quality!

Another local German specialist has quoted £513 for gearbox oil and filter as well as the rear diff oil. That seems pretty good to me!

It's automatic fluid. About £20 a litre and there's approximately 9litres in the box :/

Actually the dealer is technically correct. For the first cars built, and I believe that your 2009 S5 is one such, the s-tronic gearbox had 2 filters and both were lifetime fit items. According to the self-study guide, it was always the plan that one of the filters be deleted, and this happened at the first revision (I'm not sure when that was but possibly 2011). When one of the filters was deleted, the remaining one became a serviceable item. My advice would be to find an independent VAG tech and insist on having both filters changed.

That's brilliant advice Dippy, thank you! I'll get on it :)

No problem, however I hadn't paid enough attention and my specific advice may not apply. I am referring to the 7-speed s-tronic gearbox DL501 and now that I think about it, perhaps that unit was not fitted to the V8 S5? Is yours a 6-speed tip-tronic? Of course the conclusion is still valid - it's a good idea to have the filter changed even if Audi say its not a serviceable item, but the way dealers operate often the only way to get a non-serviceable item changed is to go to an independent tech. I can recommend a good one in the SE.

Ahh mine is the 6 speed tip! There's a German car specialist where I live (Cardiff) who were the only ones to actually get back to me with a quote, so I guess it's going to be with them!
