Hi all,

My first post so I hope I'm doing it right and giving relevant information.

A few weeks ago the glow plug light started flashing randomly and the engine would drop into limp mode. My local garage diagnosed a carbon build up in the turbo, resulting in sticking vains. They reccomended a clean if not it would need replacing. I went ahead with the clean that worked for all of 2 days... Back with flashing glow plug light and limp mode.

I went to Audi uk and west London audi hoping for a good will gesture.... No such luck. They did diagnose the same fault and stated a need a new turbo.... £1600.

The desiel partial filter light has now come on too.

I've rung around for quotes today, £720 for a re-conditioned turbo, £900 for a hybrid or £1200 for a new turbo fully fitted. Do these prices sound about right??

I am looking to have the car mapped in the future, does the turbo choice now matter??

Can anyone reccomended a turbo specialist in SW London area?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers Gareth

Not sure how much I paid for my turbo, as I had a few other things done at the same time. Gut feeling though is that those prices are a little high. London prices maybe.

I'd go for hybrid and then get someone to egr/dpf delete the car and map it accordingly

Sorry for sounding stupid... What do u mean by egr/dpf?

And Ash187 I'm not sure on the turbo brand...

Tuners can install a blanking plate over the EGR valve. They also remove, gut and reinstall the DPF. Then they code the egr and dpf out of the system

Maybe worth speaking with a reputable tuner who would be able to explain in much more detail

Hi that's for clearing that up... The garage who has given me the cheapest quotes (a friend of a friend) has mentioned a remap and removing the DPF for £1300 including the hybrid turbo??? Does that sound about right?

And I thought removing the DPF would be an automatic fail on the next MOT?

Cheers Gareth

1300 for supply, fit the hybrid turbo, remove the dpf and do a custom map? Sounds too cheap?

What they do is remove the dpf, gut it and then reinstall at. But I'm not sure what side of the law that leaves u on

As I said it is a friend of a friend...

Just worried come next MOT I'm stuck with a bill to pass... Might just go for the recon turbo...

Cheers for all your help

That's not a bad price for DPF removal, re-map and turbo.
It's about £400 to remove the DPF internals and re-map to suit. Basically the DPF looks identical from the outside, so no MOT examiner would know what was done. The filter housing is cut apart, internals removed and then welded back up.
I was planning a TDI 170 when I bought my current car, so I checked it all out.
For what it's worth, I wouldn't put a re-con turbo on another car. Tried it once and it packed in soon after installing. I ended up with a Garrett, which was night and day better.

I was advised against a recon too. Is it correct hybrids are basically recons but with non standard parts?

Broadly speaking, yes. Finished to a good standard though, as it has to be anticipated that a hybrid IS going to get some abuse.

Cheers for clearing that up.

Just not sure if I'm going to be keeping the car that long...

Might risk the re-con... Garage said they would guarantee it for 1 year.

So finally decided...

A friend of mine who owns a garage called me back today... £700 for a new audi turbo plus cost to fit... And he'll have it done by Christmas...

Boom!
