2005 Audi A6 MMI is dead. Help is needed to identify the fault

    Hello,

    I was wondering if anyone can suggest steps to identify the fault on Audi A6 AVANT (C6) 2005 MMI high. It went dead out of nowhere. The screen is black, none of the MMI functions are working. Even power button doesn't lit up. I've checked fuses next to the driver seat and in the boot and they all seems to be fine. However I am not sure if there is a dedicated fuse for the MMI system or it is shared with something else.

    I have tried disconnecting battery for 10-15 minutes - nothing changed.

    I have VAG COM and it wouldn't show any error but at the same time wouldn't connect to any of the relevant controllers (such as radio, sat nav, etc...)

    I was wondering if anyone had similar experience and if the are known ways of diagnosing a fault.

    There is a fuse in the boot (5amp) that controls radio and nav, when you unlock the car, lights should come on the nav unit in boot, can you eject the disc, if it is all dead then fuse, otherwise I am not sure, but it suddenly going dead smacks of a fuse blown

    Does your avant have a factory phone kit?
    Does your avants rear wash wipe still work? - test it.

    With the cold weather it could be one of two things...

    If you have a factory phone kit installed then chances are that the water pipe under carpet on the passenger side has come apart and has flooded the passenger footwell and flooded/killed the phone ECU.

    The rear wash wipe pipe has split above the rear left boot hinge and is flooding the rear MMI tray and taken out one or more of the components in the rear MMI tray.

    With VCDS run a loop test and see possibly where the fault lies.

    If it's non of the above this may pinpoint which module has failed.

    Well that looks like the control head behind the glovebox is dead. So it's not water damage which is good. It is not something you can bypass to test as it is integral to the MMI functions. One thing I might try is to just bypass the CD changer in the glovebox, as this is showing an error, but only one, it is probably OK, but a quick bypass and test will make sure. It really looks like the controller 07 to me.

    A new/used control head is between 200 and 400 euros from ebay, make sure you get one fitted with A6 software. You can swap it yourself, but it will require component protection removing by a dealership afterwards.

    How do I bypass the CD changer in the glove box?

    Is eBay the only place to buy control head from?

    Are there any companies that can remove protection other than dealership?

    Buy a fiber bypass connector from Audi, around £10.

    It's the best place, they are around £800-1000 from the dealers in the UK

    You need an online connection to the GEKO database to clear CP, so dealers are the only option unless you know someone with online VAS access ither than a dealer.

    Any chance for the bypass part number?

    If I buy a replacement control head and stick in the place of existing one - will I get a chance to test that it is working or do I have to remove CP first?

    When I turn up at a dealer - will they be suspicious about the source of the new control head or they don't care?

    Thanks for helping with the problem but I still have more questions.

    When looking for the new control head - do I need to get exactly the same part numbers or not?

    My unit currently has the following part numbers:
    4E0 035 729 (SW: 4F0 910 730 D)

    There are couple of units available on eBay:
    4E0 035 729 (SW: 4F0 910 729 Q)
    4E0 035 729 (SW: 4F0 910 731 RX)

    Will they work instead of my unit?

    The second one from eBay is a brand new - does it mean there will be no problem with CP?

    All units will have CP regardless of new or used. It will work until you turn the key in the ignition, then CP will kick in and the sound will dissappear until CP is removed.

    Ask Audi parts to look up the bypass part number.

    Any unit should work with 4F0 software, but the later the better as the software will be more upto date.

    hello, sorry if this has been covered before but i have a similar problem which has just been diagnosed today.
    last thursday the rear nearside speaker started making a really loud crackling noise which lasted for 2-3 minutes, i tried to turn the radio off but nothing would respond. i left the car switched off for half an hour and when i started it again the MMI was dead. Ive taken it to the main dealer today who said the rear washer pipe had split flooding the amp (A4FO 910 223 B), the diognostic also came back saying the interface at the front was showing a problem.
    I have contacted AUDI cust services who are investigating the issue (they also seeme surprised that this has happend).
    I cant understand how such expensive electronics can be positioned under a pipe containing water????????
    Has anyone ever had any joy with AUDI on similar design flaws?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I am afraid I can only suggest looking for blown fuse on the left side of the dashboard. There is a little 5 amp fuse there which is responsible for the power to the MMI control head. If it is gone - you'll get similar issues. But if it is ok - then MMI control head need to be replaced.

    Can't see why they are suprised, it's a common event on the Avants, particularly on the A6 where the electronics is held on the left of the boot.

    You should push hard to get something towards the repair, especially with this cold weather we see a lot of broken or loose water pipes completely trashing MMI systems.

    I would be suprised if the front controller has failed, more likely to be just the rear amp. If it's non BOSE I think I have one here.

    I don't know as I don't work for Audi, but there is a sleeving fix that they fit over the rear of the hose. I guess Audi dealers will try it on and see if they can get away with it. If it was me I would fix it for free as a design issue, but I'm not a money grabbing dealership.

    Did you get a response from Audi? I had the same happening to me on January 1st ... and it will cost me CHF 3,500 to replace it (that's about 2500 GBP) ... ouch. I'm trying to get in touch with Audi and fill a complaint but its difficult to track them down.

    I have just had problems with my car electrics... Flat battery once over for no reason, various gremlins with rear high level brake light, basically everything at the back of the car.

    Just happens that there was an outstanding recall for the rear wash wipe. It stopped working a few months ago, so booked it in with Audi. Turns out the water pipe had split, leaking into the consoles on the left of the boot. They all needed replacing at a cost of £1,000, but Audi paid for the lot without question.

    Its a 2005 A6 avant (C6)... So for anyone else having these problems... Don't be fobbed off!!! Audi in Huddersfield have excelled themselves today!!!

    Hi, I have a 2005 S-Line Audi A6 Avant Quattro ... MMI is dead, damaged by leaking rear screen wash hose...
    Audi UK have refused to honour manufacture's warranty on the amp (£900 item)...
    despite local Audi dealership identifying that leak was cause of damage...
    I have removed amp to try & dry out on radiator overnight...
    What chances of success...??
    or should I source one from breaker on ebay...??

    Have Audi fixed the water leak, as that should have been done under a recall. If they won't replace the amp just get one on ebay. I may go into component protection, which will require a visit to the dealer to remove, but seeing as the pipe should have already been fixed I would push to get that done free.
