my Girlfriend has a 2004 2.0Tdi A3, its has started knocking when going round islands n turning at lower speeds in general, now on her MOT last week the guy said there was a small pinhole in the cv boot on one side, could this be causing the knocking? if so whats the best way of fixing it? can you get repair kits or is it new driveshaft jobby?

    cheers

The CV boot covers & protects the CV joint which is packed with grease. If the boot bursts then the grease flies out and that can let the joint dry out and get damaged. If its just a pin hole its unlikely to have caused it but this is not to say the CV jont hasnt gone. Unfortunately it hard to say what it is without hearing it.

If it's the joint you need to remove the driveshaft to do it. IIRC, you can unbolt the torx bolts at the gearbox end of the shaft & the large nut at the hub and remove the shaft that way.

Ok thanks for your reply, so can I get parts to repair it or do I need to get a whole new drive shaft?

TBH it's a real pig of a job swapping a CV joint if you can get a complete driveshaft in good condition from a breaker I'd go that route, it's still not a quick easy DIY job but a lot easier to do a straight swap that strip and rebuild the driveshaft.

had a look under the car today and noticed the cv boot is leaking oil but not alot so there is still some in the boot. could this still be causing the knocking or could it be something else causing it?

    thanks

The CV joint is mostly likely worn out, the lack of grease is prob what caused it.

You really need to work out which side it is, as in you need to make sure it is that side with the split boot that is the knocking, if you have axle stands, and if your lucking at doing yourself I would expect you to have them, then get the frontend up in the air and on axle stands securely, take the front wheels off and start the car, put in first gear and let it drive the front, get your mrs to turn the wheel lock to lock and listen to both sides, you should then be able to confirm the side that is worn.

Only do the above if your comfortable with cars and it's not a quattro.... You may need to disable ESP when you start the car.

cv joint is nothing big go to any good motor store. they only cost a few quid for a good one. then go to a garage and they ll disconnect driveshaft from wheel. stretch the cv joint with there tool put it in place and oil it up. its minor wear and tear nothing to worry about

Zedzo - I think you must mean the cv boot is nothing big !

Surely the cv joint is something different !

Ok guys I'll do what you suggested and check that, but it's only knocking at about 25mph or above when turning right, wouldn't it be doing it at any speed it it was the cv joint?

As for changing it I should be ok, changed the boots on one of my focus ST driveshafts last week so can't be much different lol

My CV joint had to be replaced last month, ended up doing both in the end. I didnt get a knocking sound just loads of sideways vibration. My joints had lost all the grease so were very damaged and worn.

I just bought a CV joint kit (manufactured by vaico) from GSF for £50 and its got a really good colour instruction book in the box. Going to change mine next weekend, seems like a fairly simple job.
