Hi everyone..

Ive recently purchased a 55 reg 2.0tfsi

Its is in for warranty repair (after one week) to replace the intake manifold runner but on top of that the engine sounds quite tappety almost like a diesel.

The garage who are doing the repair have said that this sounds like a normal 10 year old tfsi and it is just due to the hpfp that the noise is so prolific. Yet another mechanic has said that it wounds like a bag of nails and he suspects the cam timing chain and tensioner needs replacing. The noise is only there when idle.

Does anyone no who i should believe or what i can do to rule the latter out.

And just out of curiousity how much would it cost to replace the cam timing chain.

Thank you!!

I know the 2.0 tfsi engines in the mk5 gti's are very tappety, mine is and so is a mates, and as was his previous GTi so it may worth getting another opinion or comparing against somebody with the same car

They're noisy.
What oil / oil spec are you using? 504?
It's a belt for me.
Get the can follower checked.

My s3 sounds like a bag of **** on idle sweet as a nut through rev range though ,66k full Audi history so belt etc all done on time

Its got 5w/30 in there
Cam belt done 4000 miles ago
I mite take it to audi themselves for there opinion or if it works out cheaper just getting the work done

its around £400 supplied and fit to get the cam chain + tensioner replaced from a decent specialist
although TFSI's are supposed to have this 'feature', you really should compare with another to give yourself peace of mind, if its much noiser then get it replaced.
Also another common cause of this is if the oil pick up pipe gets partially blocked. it requires the sump being taken off to replace if i recall correctly.
and also the cam follower if you have an uprated hpfp.

Welcome to direct injection :)

Make sure the oil is 502 spec, 504 is the proper one but the difference is primarily around deposits and minimizing buildup.

Can anyone reccomend the actual oil product to use then on a stock 2.0tfsi as i dont no what these specs relate to

Yeah alot of people have said its a noisy engine which makes it hard to know when there actually is a problem with the car. I think i am going to get the car back and perform an engine flush and oil change so if anyone could reccomend good engine flush and oil to use it will be much apprecciated

I use Castrol edge

Does anyone no if audi offer a service to test the engine for a wearing timing chain, blocked oil pick up pipe, worn cam follower and oil starvation? And if they do offer that level of fault diagnosis how much they charge?

No idea about the Audi service. But mine sounds **** on idle too, done less than 2k on new cam follower. Mines AXX engine code.

Mine has just had the cam chain tensioner replaced as it was smashed up inside. It sounded like rubbing metal and was fairly loud, i thought it was just normal until i had many oil pressure lights.
I would recommend getting the pick up pipe changed, iv had it done twice and both times its been fully blocked, only a few hours labour and a cheap part for peace of mind.

If it sounds like mine did... its broke. see below.

i was quoted approx £30 for the new pick up filter and quoted couple hours labour so around the £125 mark. i am looking to get this done next oil change, before i go getting the chain and bits replaced.

Im pickibg the car up today so ill comapre to that in video.. I think like you said just out of peace of mind i will get the pick up pipe done as its a 10 year old car and if it hasnt been done before its 9 times out of ten going to be blocked

Its a pretty major job to do I believe due to the location.
