    Hi there,

new to the forum so please bear with me!

Thought I would share my experience with you all and get your thoughts. I own a 55 a6 sline avant 2l tdi which I bought some 6 years ago and has now covered 113k with a full Audi service history. Never had any real problems but has always used a far bit of oil and I only topped up with the oil level indicator came on in the centre of the dash, every few thousand miles. Over the past two weeks I have noticed the engine getting considerably noisier so much so I took it to my local mechanic to check over. It was rattling from the sump and a drowning noise coming from the left hand front end when being driven at low speed. He couldn't find a problem but did comment on the noise. Last Sunday we were packing the car for a week away in the tent and planning to pull the trailer with the a6. I left the car running on the drive to inflate and check the tyre pressures and the noise was unbearable. I stopped the car immediately and checked the web when I found this thread. Lucky i did!!On reading I decided not to take the car on the 600 mile round trip to south wales and borrowed a car for the journey and dropped my car at the local Audi dealer to take a look. This was on the Tuesdays and a friend dropped the car off. The dealer said that they would look at it on Thursday of last week. On Thursday got a call asking for authority to open the sump up and take a look. The did mention that they thought it was the balance shaft but need to investigate and this would cost £460! I sanctioned this and didn't hear anything untill today 4 days later when I rang them. The lady at the end of phone said good news you don't need a new engine or turbo but you will need a new balance shaft costing £2k with the £460 additional taking the cost to £2460. Straight away she stated that as the car has full VAG service history they would wave 50% of the costs leaving me bill of £1230. Which I thought good to offer but I then questioned will the balance shaft fail again at some point further down the line where by she confirmed that the part has been modified to prevent failure in the future. This to me says that VAG are openly admitting the part is defective and should I be pushing for 100% of the cost be covered by VGA? Your thoughts would be appreciated on that last point and also the longevity of the new modified balance shaft.

they have also mentioned that the part is not available for at-least 10 days and have offered me a courtesy car in 7 days time.

    Cheers

    neil k

I have got the same vehicle and the same problem as you! the Audi told me exactly the same how lucky I am as I dont need a new engine, but I decide to take this further to take the legal action against them, you should not paid as this is the design fault and apparently they do not manufacture the chain driven oil pump anymore!! when this fail they replace it with gear driven but still charging the customer that amount of money which is ridiculous.

So did you get a full refund or did you not agree to pay??

Fun thing I have just read this and Audi just called to say that my car is ready to be picked up! And want the cash before releasing my car. So a quick response would be good. Thanks for the reply.

Ok just picked my car up this morning, costing me just over £1300 (they replaced the timing belt at the same time)!!

When asked what they had done they mentioned that they had replaced the balance shaft and also the oil pump and changed the oil obviously. There was no mention about changing the chain drive to a gear drive system and I questioned them about this and they knew nothing about the change from chain to gears. Should I pursue this further or be happy with the repair? Audi also mentioned the repair was guaranteed for 2 years.

Of course they wont tell you the true, they know how many people are involve!! and when I asked them they told me the exact same answer (WE DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT), I did asked them what type of oil pump my car has and the answer was no idea until we open the engine, when they done this they modify the part and telling how lucky you are!! different vehicle different oil pump some are chain driven and when fail they replace it with the latest gear driven as the previous gear driven was faulty 2, so they do re design it to make it work!!

Is up to you to fight for your money and don't let them to get away with it, I wont pay for them mistake and I will not give up until they fix my vehicle, that's for sure, this is my last Audi I will ever have as soon this repair done the vehicle will be gone for good! I will let all the Audi driver knows to get rid off them car before this happen to them.

Do I need oil sump if I buy new latest version of balance shaft module for BLB? In ETKA it is written that you need to buy it, but is it possible with drill out some material to insert the old oil sump?

Do I need to install new version of oil sump if I buy latest spur gear driven balance shaft for 2.0 TDI BLB?

When Audi converted my BLB to a gear driven oil pump/balance shaft assy they fitted a new oil sump.
Others claim they have had the conversion done without changing the sump.
    Go figure ...........................

You won't have the chain problem, but you do have the balance shaft issue to be concerned about on both cars.

The shaft goes into the oil pump, so to get at it you need to remove the sump.

balancer shaft fault continued into the early B8 models. Audi have revised the shaft & oil pump, but no idea how much the revised parts are. Have a search on the site and you should find more information with pictures & pricing.

The Oil pump/balance shaft problem is STILL ongoing and there have been reports on the new B8 models having failures as recent as 2010.

    Hi everyone!

I am new here and need some advice please.

I am looking to buy a 2010 Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI PD.
    Registered 09.04.2010. 85000 miles.

Would like to find out if that car is free from those problems mentioned in this thread?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Please help me kind of urgent as I need to decide before the weekend.

    Thank you

Basically we are not sure, it's too early to tell. We are now starting to get 08/09 B8 owners with hex shaft death. I haven't heard about Skoda engines but suspect there could still be an issue. You need to see if the hex shaft has been modified since 2010 for your car to know if it had the fault.

    Hi Wrath,

    Thanks for your reply.

That particular Skoda has full history.
At 60k miles the cambelt and the waterpump was changed. This is a high spec model Laurin & Klement, however I don't know if that makes any difference ie got a better engine with those problems sorted.

    Thank you

Yeah, it doesn't matter on the spec just the engine. They did start modifying the hex around that period but whether they actually did a good job is another point. I don't know how daunting a task it is to change but it won't be anywhere near fixing a BLB. Might be worth getting it, dropping the sump and checking the hex shaft.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the site. Just read the whole thread. I'm looking to buy 2006 a4 2.0 tdi 140 with multitronic box. I'm just wondering if this is a bad idea. I phoned Audi today and gave them the Reg number of the car. They told me its the gear drive.
But I'm assuming it's the **** original one.
Does anyone know if you can just change the hex shaft to the longer hardened type. Or is it the entire balancer shaft that is out of concentricity.
I think there is an engineering company that does a kit.
Could this shaft be changed by just taking the sump off.
This car had just got its fly wheel and clutch done.
I didn't think an auto had one ?????

I just phoned the parts department. He looked up the parts needed and told me it was gear driven.
I'm in Dublin. I don't know whether they have a different policy to the UK

Hello, I am new here,so I am sorry if I break some rules, but I think I am probably at right place to ask the question... I have 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander, with 2.0 ltr, VAG engine, code BSY.
Somewhere online I found that this engine doesn't have balance shaft, but how to be sure? I asked @ mitsubishi service, they sent me to VAG service, and VAG service won't speak to me because car isn't VAG :( Is there some way to find engine spec to check whether it has this issue?

Regarding asking Audi to find out which type of balancer shaft you have, it depends on who you ask. I tried 3 dealers the 1st two said they cant find out on ETKA and would need to pay them £300-£400 to strip it down and find out!!!

Then the 3rd dealer gave me a print out entire known Audi history (I've the BRD and was glad to see recall completed for all injectors) but nothing noted regarding balance shaft/ pump. They then got the spares guy to check ETKA and he confirmed I had the Gear Driven one but mine was just on the cusp of the changeover to uprated ones and they couldn't tell that detail. They then said £100 to strip down and take a look (if done at same time as doing service). Better than the 1st 2 dealers but still not taking them up on it.

I have mine in at MidlandVW in the for investigation will let you know how things go, maybe try to take some pictures (if they will let me) whilst the sump is off for information.
