    Common problem, unusual cause
    Increasing engine temperature generally points towards a low level of engine coolant. However, an interesting case arose in the common VAG 2.0 TDI engine pointing to something completely different. Pierburg investigates…..

    Possible engine complaints:
    • Engine temperature increases
    • Engine warning light appears
    • “Shutdown shuddering” after turning of the engine
    The investigation:
    • Coolant levels were reviewed and appeared to be normal
    • Engine shuddering pointed towards the air supply system (e.g. air mass sensor, throttle body etc)
    • A diagnostic tool revealed the following fault code: P2102 - Throttle Actuator Control Motor Circuit
    • While there was a fault with the throttle body, it was not responsible for the engine overheating
    • Further investigation revealed that the throttle body and engine fan are protected by the same fuse
    • These complaints may be due to a defective or damaged throttle body

    The remedy:
    • Investigate the throttle body to see if this is stuck or contaminated with carbon or oil
    • If this is the case the throttle body is defective and must be replaced
    • If the fuse has blown, replace it and ensure this has the same amp rating as the one removed!
    Did you know?
    • In practice a number of different terms are used for throttle bodies such as:
      • Throttle valve
      • Diesel valve
      • Intake manifold throttle
      • Volkswagen would refer to it as an ‘intake manifold flap’
