2.0tdi ECU OBDII remap - It's here!!!

Eef - whats the plug in option referred to in the dyno graphs please and how much is it? As I drive a company car it would make more sense being able to sell it / transfer it to the next one.

Cheers

Just curious as it probably goes against the point of upgrading but what happens to your typical mpg? I've got an A3 2.0 TDI S-line with DSG and was wondering what the trade off would be in getting the car chipped or otherwise.

I'm getting about 49-50 mpg at the moment. It seems like its got enough power for the road at the moment (though a bit laggy when pulling away) but more is always nice. How much quicker will it feel when chipped to 185bhp or so? I got rid of my MkIV GTI-T due to running costs (30mpg av.). The audi seems quicker anyway.

Most people say that if you drive it 'normally' thenyou will see no loss of mpg and some claim a gain.

However..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Once chipped most people tend to drive the car harder than before, to utilise the new power, thus in real terms you'll probably see a small drop.

My car has been re-mapped and has 180bhp & 295lb torque, this has been confirmed on a separate set of rollers, during everyday 'restrained' driving you won't notice a great deal of difference to performance and I can confirm mpg will improve, you do feel excellent benefits once you plant your right foot, the car really comes alive with the increased torque and is what can only be described as 'rapid' through the gears - you won't gain a huge amount in Ist due to the short gearing but grab a fistful of second and off you go ! As reported if you utilise the extra power you will use more fuel but not a great deal, I do very few long journeys and still average 44/45 mpg. I have had no problems with clutch slip or any other issues and certainly have no regrets.

Who ever you choose for the remap, if done well you will not regret it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

192 BHP
296 LBS

thats pretty good.

Torque is the acceleration and BHP is the Top end speed.

Bet it ovetakes like a starship now !

Any word yet on which make of 'plug-in device' was used in this test ???

Did you PM Richard? Alternatively, send him a mail via forgemotorsport.

I didn't PM Richard as I presumed he wouldn't actually sell the box concerned,so I thought it a bit 'rude' to ask him for a competitor's name !

I did not test it to disprove it in any way. The opposite in fact, we were looking for an option for the EDC16 cars in the early days as there were no obd chips available. The claim on the box was 21 bhp which is pretty accurate. I did get an Audi dealership to test it on their fleet cars and they loved it (however I have converted them to remaps now and they are happier again). All in all it was not bad but I discontinued the idea of us (Forge) selling these as there were similar things on the market. If anyone really wants one of these for the company car/removal when giving car back thing then email Forge on tuning@forgemotorsport.co.uk

Rich.

Well it seems that Starperformance has got in on the act too.

Taken from UK MKIV's forum:

Starperformance has just released OBD port tuning to upgrade the new EDC16 & EDC16+ ECU boxes, currently used on the latest TDI engines. This now means software can be down loaded without the need to remove the ECU box. Workshop time is 2 hours approx this will include before & after rolling roads sessions.

MED9 will be released next month, which covers the new Golf MkV 2.0lt Gti turbo.

For more details contact Starperformance on 01592 655595. or email jimcurley@starperformance.co.uk

Jim.

A mate sent me a link to Starperformance yesterday Japper.
A trip to Kirkcaldy may well be called for, once funds allow.
I like the way this method is 'non-invasive' and, therefore, undetectable.

Do you know how much / what figures ?

Let me run something by you all...

Now,I doubt the likes of Star performance have umpteen software experts on their books,so they are either buying the 'tune-up' software from someone else or it's already there 'lurking' in the OBD.

Now,you may or may not also recall that an ex Audi mechanic I know, who still services and repairs cars for chums, plans to buy some VAG hardware and software to access the OBD....

Can you see where I'm going with this ?

I'm not trying to deny the likes of Starperformance a living but,at the same time,I don't see why I should pay,say,£500 for software that they have bought for far less themselves.

Just a thought !

Different kit Bowfer. The stuff that Jim will have taken on costs quite a bit more than VAG software and a bit of cable to connect to the OBD2 port!

Its a major investment in both hardware and software and he is taking a gamble in respect to his belief that he will eventually break even on the investment.

As I said, I would recommend that you give Jim a phone to discuss things over with you.

Japper, here is the reply from Starperformance.I think their prices are a bit steep myself, but there you go; /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hi Andy, the power will reach 185bhp approx with 385Nm the cost is £595.00 + vat this will include before & after rolling road sessions or £509.79 + vat
without the rolling road. Workshop time is 2 hours.
Jim.

Yikes, that's a bit steep, compared with the competition /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I understand that, as we all need to make money, but you still need to be competitive and with the exception of AMD ( who have a very good reputation / image ) then Starperformance's price seems a little pricey /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

To be fair, his investment is not my problem.

Why should I go to him when Superchips are a good bit cheaper and roughly the same distance away ?

It could be argued Superchips are a well known/respected name as well, whereas he's a 'one man band' using relatively unproven techniques.

I think he's made a major mistake pricing himself so highly,to be honest.

bowfer, Superchips dealer is far closer - Bridge of Don ( Wallace p4mance )

You sure Japper ?
The only scottish dealer mentioned on their website is Glenrothes in Fife, unless I made a mistake in the search thing.
I've heard iffy reports about Wallace as well.

Yep, but I wouldn't use them, as they specialise in chavy nova's, calibra's and anything involving bad taste really /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Falkland Performance centre is actually where I got my car remapped. Very professional service and no problems.

They are the main dealer in scotland but there are others who deal with Falkland to sell the product on I guess.

I've got no problem with the superchips offering at all.

You two have the perfect excuse when the coppers pull you..

You were 'investigating your cars' capabilities'.

Japper,I will expect a full report on my desk no later than 1000 the following day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
