2.0TDI 3dr Vs 5dr?

Looking at buying a 2007ish 2.0TDI S-Line a3 (140) towards the end of this year for more MPG and power but cant decide between the 3 door and the 5 door. Anyone know of any notable differences between the two besides the number of doors?

For me, the practicality of the 5 door wins every time.
I also prefer the styling of the Sportback, with the added bonus that later Sportback models had the LED rear lights , which the 3 door never received .

Three doors are a right nuisance when it comes to adult sized rear passengers. Even with young children and baby/child seats, rear doors make life much easier.

I have definitely noticed how difficult the 3 doors are to use, especially with the seats not sliding forwards when you fold them unlike any other 3 door car.

My seats fold then slide forward to make it easier for people to get in the back...

They are supposed to slide forward. Sometimes you just have to manually push the backrest a little bit down more and then slide the seat forward. If it still doesn't slide then it may be that the clip that provides tension to the cable has broken, meaning that the lock on the seat rail isn't being released when you pull the handle on the top of the seat. I've fixed this on my car and it's quite a common problem.

EDIT: To the OP, I have a 3 door, but to be fair a 5-door would have been so much more practical and can still look very good. To top it off, 5-door models had the option of a panoramic roof too!

They are supposed to slide forward. Sometimes you just have to manually push the backrest a little bit down more and then slide the seat forward. If it still doesn't slide then it may be that the clip that provides tension to the cable has broken, meaning that the lock on the seat rail isn't being released when you pull the handle on the top of the seat. I've fixed this on my car and it's quite a common problem.

Yeah I've always like the roof rails for some reason. Not to keen on the silver ones in the photo but they do look good on the car

3 door models got LED rear lights as well after facelift.

I own a 3 door but if I were buying again, I would buy 5 door.

I'm guessing though that they're not as 'obvious' as the Sportback ones?
The difference between the LED ones and the earlier light units on the 5 door is incredible , IMHO anyway....

5 door sportback will hold its money far better than the 3 door, more particle by a long way and easier to sell.

Rear of the 3 door just looks very dated imo, specifically the lights. I also think the 5 door Sportback is just generally nicer looking and much more practical.

The RS3 does look very very nice in a 5dr. I've seen a few 3 doors with RS3 bits and they look pretty nice, but I think the 5 door is just better proportioned but I'm still very undecided

Quite suprised by the 5 door love, whilst I agree with the practicality imo the 3 Door is Much Better looking car.
If you haven't got children I'd go for 3 door like I have! Also disagree that a 5 door will hold is money better... price up a 3 door and 5 door same spec / mileage and you will see the 3 door is more expensive.. why because there's not so many of them!

money-wise they depend of requirements of market and availability of them so is depending on trends etc... I've been looking for 5 doors as was looking for nice looking, practical car. nothing wrong with 3 doors but if you love your a3 and don't lwt it go in say 4 years cuz of baby or other stuff, better 5 door then, if for you is a car for everything from skids to travels up and down the country as well getting some people 5 door will do the job, but is mainly depending of your preferences and taste.

So after a long time of debating ive decided in going to go for the 3 doors as it fits my needs practicality wise, I doubt ill have kids for another 7+ years so that wont be an issue for me, and I prefer the longer doors on the 3 door for getting in and out as I quite tall and have a few problems with my knee, but ill more than likely just upgrade to the MY11 rear lights as they do look much much better, now all ive gotta do is find one
