2.0T sounds like a hooooover

    Hey fellow 2.0T fsi owners.
    I generally enjoy my B7 sedan but there's one thing that annoys the **** out of me.
    I sound like a big 200 bhp hoooover!
    does your 2.0T's sound like a dyson too??
    any cure for it?
    i was thinking about a performance panel filter or a cold air kit..
    anyone else with any other ideas, experience?

    Hey,

    Is yours the FWD? If so are you referring to the whistling from the exhaust after about 4000 rpm?

    no its a quattro and it sounds awful in low revs, gets better around 3500 and higher.then it actually sounds like an engine!

    I wouldn't recommend a cold air kit or changing the standard airfilter Matey. Where is the Dyson sound coming from? You mean to diesel like chatter off the engine or something else. Is the noise coming from any particular side of the engine? Incidentally what fuel do you use?

    Hi.
    Its the general sound of the engine which I'm not happy with.
    the chatter doesn't bother me its when the car is in low revs it kind of moans instead of roaring.
    There's nothing wrong with the car.. it actually might be just me.
    All my previous audis had a cold air kit ,nice roar (not too loud) and a nice shh from the DV.
    I really miss that , other than that I'm a happy chap 7 days a week driving my B7.
    and regards the fuel. i use strictly V power these days.

    Cant say mine has ever sounded like that in 3 years. Always sounded well and people have always commented on how good it sounds. Never once thought it sounded like a dyson. Maybe theres a problem?
    Leaking boost pipe? Or maybe even a loose dyson under there lol! ;)

    I put an APR carbonio on mine and it was the best move i made. Much more responsive, better on fuel and sounds nice, especially with the k04. Even with the k03 it performed much better than a standard panel filter. Also actually sounded like it had a turbo aswell, which is always nice :)

    Right got you. Can't you meet up wae other B7 owners in your area and just compare engine sounds and rule that one out .....think you should start wae that. As others posted, as long as the cars running well with no issues, it might just be the good old characteristic. I mentioned about the cold air kits as I read somewhere that they actually made some 2.0t's perform worse when fitted and knackered up the MAF sensor too, but if you want that swoosh dv and intake sound , then maybe that should be your next move.

    For some reason my old 1.8Tq A3 and 2.0Tq A4 both sounded like TDIs lower down the rev range, think that it is just what they sound like, just use more revs :salute: The V8 S4 on the other hand sounds superb compared to my 3.0TDI tractor.

    yeah the one on the pic might have a perfect sound :o.k:

    Ben I drove 8l A3 1.8T before this B7 and it had awesome sound with a jetex cone , forge Dv on the front and for the rear a scorpion catback set the tone :eyebrows:

    After listening to that video properly... If what I'm hearing is right then it sounds like a lot of play in the chain and tensioner? They sound like a diesel anyway on tick over. With you saying Hoover, I expected like a whooshing noise from a split boost pipe etc. mine was very noisey until I replaced the chain and tensioner. Still sounds like a diesel like but that's the nature of the engine.

    Sounds like a noisy power steering pump mate, have you checked the power steering levels?

    No I haven't as the car was health checked and scanned for codes etc recently and everything was fine. I'll check it tomorrow.

    See if the noise changes when you move the steering wheel side to side, then ya know it's the power steering pump.

    As craig said above start the car and move the steering right to left if you hear the whine then its the power steering pump.

    Also check your fluid for the power steering if it is empty it will suck air and make a simliar whine.

    Secondly i had a similar issue when my tensioner was on its way out. So when last was your auxiliary belt changed as it may be stretched

    Worth a check only cost 12-15 quid for the belt.

    To test the tensioner is quite simple just take a 12 or 14 spanner and pull the tension off the tensioner and listen if the noise goes away.

    That is what it looks like if you see on the tensioner in the picture 6 o clock there is a little thick piece sticking out u put the socket on that and turn it anti clock wise.

    Check colour of the p/s fluid, it has to be green - not the old style red oil. The red stuff makes steering and pump noisy too

    Gentlemen , got it.
    after a few days of intense research, investigation the outcome is...
    Water pump on its way out.
    Since I got to change the cam belt soon anyway so i just left the car at me mates garage to tackle it now.
    it sounds better now, but its still not the sound of an engine i would desire.
    Well got to get new exhaust and do something to the air intake then...
