Hey guys,

this is my first post here, haven't even uploaded a photo yet. Ive had my S3 about 6 months and looking to do some small mods, if i ever stop damaging the poor thing first! however i do have one main problem that need sorting immediately!

Having hit a pothole at great speed last night my car has gushed out all its power steering fluid, ive took it to my mechanic who has told me the Steering Rack is completely ******** and needs replacing. For a like for like replacement the rack is £380 for a new one, plus then labour and fluids etc. Another problem is they dont have a stock of them and it will take over a week to get!!!

however after reading some forum posts (there are thousands!) i have decided to replace it with a reconditioned one from a TT at a much more reasonable £200! i found Prawns track car post most helpfull -

http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-forum-8l-chassis/109831-prawns-a3-track-car-nurburgring-toy.html

here is says it is a direct swap, however Prawns is a 1.8T and mine is the Quattro, will this be a problem?? driving the car is horrendous so i want to make it a one trip job! My mechanic is not an audi specialist but he is a friend of a friend, and has worked on my cars many times in the past, he thought it would take him and his buddy most of a day to fit it, but after reading these posts people seem to say its only a couple hours of a job, is this right? is it worth taking to a specialist if it will save me hours of labour? il admit straight away that i have next to NO mechanical knolage what so ever!!!

Here is the Reconed Rack i was looking to order:

AUDI TT 4WD 99 > 06 POWER STEERING RACK - ACS Power Steering Store

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

many thanks in advance , Rob

Oh, my car is a 1999 S3 quattro, engine code APY if this helps

Hi Rob, welcome to ASN. Im sure the guys will be able to advise you. Looks like you have certainly done a fair bit of reading already. Another good thread to read would be by user westy. It will have lots of info as well. Post up pics of your car when you get a chance and enjoy the forum. :)

my mate paid just £40 for a second hand one for his 1.8t mk4 golf, and it was still attached to a subframe! its been on his car 6 months and is still going strong.

personally with racks id either buy a brand new one or an original second hand.

ive seen enuf dodgy reconned units to put me off for good!
