This is a car i bought a few years ago with a broken cambelt, as some of you know, every head i take off i port and polish the intake/exhaust tracts. With this one there was no exception: double valve springs were fitted and pd150 hydro lifters/tappets. Also dropped the compression by fitting a thicker head gasket. Engine ran sweet as a nut then sold the car to one of my mates- he ran it for 2-3 years then i got it back from him ! Today i spent a few hours fitting a bv43 turbocharger and a mapped ECU. Next on the cards is a 11mm injector pump,Bosio race 520 nozzles and a new cambelt kit + bigger brakes all round. So far the car is nice to drive and returns 600 miles on a tank full in town- all for about £70 worth of diesel !

The turbo i have fitted is a BV43a from the new CR 2,0Tdi 170 Bhp, it's different from the old type bv43 in that it has a billet aluminium compressor wheel. Sadly it's not exactly plug and play- the compressor and exhaust housings are different from the pd170 turbo but, they do swap fine if you're using the CHRA from the CR into the PD housings... The lighter compressor wheel makes for a very, very smooth /linear power delivery which the pd turbo cannot match. There's more to do onto the car: up-rated clutch, a set of H&R antiroll bars, 1.8Tqs rear suspension hubs, front alloy hubs + bigger brakes all round.

Sounds like it would make a nice car. Its just a shame they only ever built PFL ones.

A facelift PD130 would make a pretty awesome B5 daily driver.

Couldnt you retain the CR compressor housing and just swap the hot side?

Also, whats different about TQS rear hubs? AFAIK all B5 quattros have the same rear hubs? the only bits they changed on the rear of the TQS was the upper wishbones.

The compressor housing on the CR turbo has a different flange/adapter which puts the outlet at an odd angle + plastic is not my favorite material when we talk hot air under pressure is pumping trough ! Yeah, meant upper cast wishbones...

A pd engine is nice to drive under load, however it does have a shorter powerband compared with the VE + makes torque in a less linear fashion. As side effect the VE is also much more economical and simpler to fix with basic tools.

I would have loved to have a facelifted 1.9Tdi quattro- they were available in Europe but for some reason not imported here though ! I have mixed feelings on the facelift- whilst i like the double din console and illuminated vents, i am not so keen on the swage lines on front/rear bumpers + the early door trims are classier ! As i said, i prefer a mixture of both and with the right ingredients it will make a nice daily driver !

Swapped the Bosio race 520 nozzles i had fitted on my other built engine, much more power and very little smoke- map is done for 0.216 nozzles, bv43 and stock 10mm pump. I will add the 11mm injector pump i have on the spare engine as well, pity i don't have time to swap my whole engine- planning to do that as soon as i feel the clutch slip !

James, it will cost a good £200 to have your head ported, i don't really polish diesel heads as i do like some degree of roughness which aids to air velocity trough the ports. Sadly i have very limited time on my hands really, most of my projects are put on the side !

Need to buy a pack of spare PCL chips to burn a couple more maps until i get the right blend of power and smoothness.

More work was done on the car this weekend, fitted the spare 4 pot calipers and 330mm brake discs, rear H&R antiroll bar + solid rs2 drop links, removed the rusty front wings and they will be replaced with new, facelift wings, new genuine xenon headlights, a full s4 front bumper, Votes side skirts and much more !
The whole car will be vax oiled + fresh underseal applied onto the new parts, i hope to keep it from rusting for as long as possible. Next i will fit a pair of Konig bucket seats and Sparco harnesses, rear rs4 312mm vented brakes, 6 speed gearbox + 240mm Southbend clutch + single mass flywheel then a gtb2056vl on a custom manifold... The car will be my track toy and i expect it to run 220-250 Bhp for the time being !

Bled the brakes today, had to make a new front brake pipe from scratch after breaking one of the unions and the brake pipe is on back order from TPS for up to 2 weeks ! Couldn't wait for that long as i really need the car to go into the paint booth very soon... Also rs4 rear brakes fitted at the same time...new eibach springs and shocks will be fitted in the next couple of days while i have some spare time... Will keep you posted...

Decat pipe and pd 130 intake fitted today, in between other jobs !

Looks like a 2.5" THS decat/downpipe 1 or 2 sections ?

What's the plan for getting around the cat visual ?

I work in the trade and i know a few testers that will turn a blind eye when everything is ok with the rest of the car... It's also only 6 bolts in the end, hardly an hour's work to turn it back to stock for Mot time...
The decat pipe is a THS stylealso sold as "direnza", it was £80 of fleabay !
