I don't know if this has been posted before, but figured it was definitely worth a mention...
My TurboQuattroShed recently finished with one of its CV joints, and when I mentioned this in passing to Byzan A4, he pointed-out that due to perculiarities of the TQS they tend to be hard-to-find/expensive/a mixture of the two.
The usual suspects confirmed this - ECP were asking something around £145 + VAT for one, and my local VW dealer would supply a new one on exchange for £135 + VAT + £65 surcharge. That was even more 'special' than I was expecting; and being 'self-employed' I decided to have a dig around to see if there were any options. I found an Irish factor who ships into the UK doing one for about £70, and very nearly placed an order there and then... Just before I did, my Dad gave me a shout (he'd been looking too) to say he'd found a firm which might be worth getting in touch with...
Enter J & R CV Joints ( J and R CV Joints | Brand new cv joints and driveshafts from a UK cv joint specialist )... If you look at their site, you'll see that they're a manufacturer of CV joints and drive-shafts, and retail them direct for what look like incredibly cheap prices. So, given that the website doesn't go into super-fine detail, I decided to give them a ring...
After the specifics of my car were confirmed, I went ahead an ordered part number 'JR378' - Outer CV joint, ancillaries (circlip for drive shaft etc.), boot, clips and grease. It was delivered next-day by DPD, with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty...
Total cost: £21.33
I honestly struggled to believe it, right up until the point it became apparent it was exactly the right fitment, and just dropped straight in (as it were); as far as quality's concerned, I can understand why they're confident enough to give a 2 year warranty, it looked and felt perfectly well machined to me. I would say it's probably worth giving them a call for any CV/drive-shaft bits you might need, but after the experience I had, I'll confidently say you'd have to be mental to not call them - they're also incredibly friendly and helpful on the phone (lines by the way are open 7 days a week, 8AM - 10PM!)
It might not be big news, but bluntly, I was f**king amazed, so though it worth documenting...
