1.8t misfire

    my boss is having an intermittent missfire in my A3 which occurs at higher revs , he had the Audi diagnostic test and this does not show any fault . he fitted new plugs and coils and the problem is still there . It appears like a complete loss of power when the apparent missfire occurs does anybody have any ideas please as i dont know

    Did you use Isoclean? I can't find the stuff anywhere. Haven't got a Maplins nearby and have tried motoring parts places, DIY places and small electrical shops.
    Did you have an aerosol and spray into the MAF unit or pour liquid into a bag and "give it a whirl" ?

    I just bought a can of "SWA (Specialised Wiring Accessories) Electrical Contact Cleaner, Non-chlorinated, rapid evaporation, non-residual, designed to remove all types of workshop contamination such as grease, dirt and oil, extremely flammable". Sound like the right stuff?

    the stuff I used is the same stuff for cleaning cds, cassettes etc. Hadn't realised until i saw it, suppose you could get it anywhere that sells video,cd,cassette cleaners. I kept squirting the stuff onto the electrical parts and then after a while gently rubbed it with a toothpick and cottonwool (not sure if it was wise) and left it for couple of hours to dry.

    So far feels a lot better.

    Ok, did mine at the weekend. The MAF didn't look how I expected it to (it was a large cast piece of metal on one side, with a plastic cover on the flip side. There was a small rectangular gel-covered area on the metal side, with a circuit board visible beneath the gel, and at the business end, it had some vanes to guide air past, and what looked like a small detector (again looking like a circuit board) in the centre of the vaned area).

    Anyways, I gave it a good spray, let it dry, chucked it back in, and there might be a tiny bit of improvement, but definitely nothing very noticeable.

    Performance isn't awful at the moment, but I notice that low-down pick up is poor.

    I'll post some pics of the MAF when I have them handy.

    hi bk1, that does look link the part number to me, just had a look at the pics of you MAF, looks nothing like the two I have for my S3, you can't actally see the sensor in mine, which is probably why my attempt to clean it didn't go anywhere, does anyone know if the S3 has a different MAF to the 1.8T Sport? can't be bothered to play with ETKA this morning.

    Yeah, I can't find pictures of any other MAF that looks like this, but then most pics on the web show it still inside the housing so hard to tell. I think that the main part number is on the housing - I tried searches for the number shown in these pictures and got nothing back.

    Note that this is an old MAF (metal date mould says 98 so I am assuming that's the year my MAF body was cast).

    Sounds exactly like what my car was doing before the primary fuel pump failed...at first thought it was the MAF but even after cleaning it would occassionally misfire...have it checked out! my car is certainly much smoother..it would hesitate slightly on uphills, I now know it was the pump not being able to cope with the demand!
