£9k S3s

    Hey all Im looking for an S3 to buy soon and wondered what the consensus was on sub 10k cars. Its prob going to be a 210bhp version facelift if I can in black or silver.

    Am I buying a dog at this price or are there genuine bargains to be had?

    prob gonna be a pre face lift or a very high miler for that money. I just bought a low milage 2001 fully specced S3 for over £12k

    S3's for under 10k are pretty common imo, you just gotta know where to look, I mean a car for sale @£10500, I'm sure most people would let it go for £10K. Depending on your personal usage, I'd go for a pre-facelift car with average or lower miles if you are using it as a daily car or if it's a weekend car, then facelift model with higher than average miles. Service history is the most important though...

    Ive been perusing the S3s lately with my potential budget of 10k, and what I expect to get for that, looking at autotrader is a facelift X or Y reg with a max of 80k miles. no problem. Probably have to be private sale though.

    Id go for facelift, def. Doesnt matter about the miles, but you'll know on a daily basis its a facelift with improved interior etc!

    I wasnt aware that they changed the interior between pre and post facelift cars, I thought the changes were to the headlights, badges and engines. I thought the only interior differences were due to what options the original owner had selected.

    The speedo pod is slightly different i think!!

    Other than that just the centre console is slightly different!!

    Well you learn something new every day.

    I though the centre consoles only differed due to the stereo fitted, ie Symphony or Concert

    climate control , stereo , gear selector, steering wheel , dials, door handles, not sure the pre facelift had the lights in the vents?

    so possibly vents as well, the there were tweaks all over on interior

    I bought my X-Reg pre-facelift with 91k and FASH for £8350, however, it was due for a service and needed new roll bars/brakes and a few other things...

    Looking back I would have bought a facelift model with lower mileage and paid more for it, no reason, just because you;re getting a better/newer car

    If you plan to buy a car around the 80k miles mark, be aware of the cambelt change, it's not cheap!
    I'm about to pay £660 for a Long Life 2 Service and cambelt change this weekend at a local independent.

    thats not too bad. Ive an M3 remember :p Also had a fiat coupe - £1200 dealer price to swap the cambelt (gulp) or £600 if you find a willing indy.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining (really). I've had the car since February and done nearly 8k miles in it and this is the first I've had to spend. When I bought the car it was stating service due in 2.5k miles, and it's still showing 300 miles before service now!
    The S3 is an excellent choice in my opinion, it's a hot hatch for grown-up's.

    thats what I want. Ive got an M3 and my missus has a 106gti so I want to merge the two and have a hot daily driver :)

    Then get something exotic for weekends for myself lol

    S3 seems to fit the bill perfectly. 4wd turbo, tuning potential, practicality and well specced. I honestly cant think of a better car! Saying that Ive never driven one so will need to get a sail in one before shelling out! Driven a 225 TT tho so should be fairly similar I guess?

    aah yes the fiat coupe cambelt. Remortgage of house required, so the mechanic can take every single bit of the engine apart for about 3 days.

    I bought my A3 with 80k on it 2.5 years ago, needed the full service and cambelt. Thought it cost £400 at a local indy all in. Thats old school non-long life system if that makes a difference?

    Yep i had a Fiat Coupe 20vt too. Think i bought a wrong un - needed new wishbones, trackrod ends, clutch, manifold, exhaust and radiator. Good car though! Anyone used to be on ww.fccuk.org?

    yes mine stung me for about 2k. done the cambelt then it jumped and whapped the head. looked great but a bit of a mare buying a cheap one. good fun tho when it went well it went well :D

    Is the Leon Cupra R not considered an alternative to the S3?
    Loads cheaper minus the 4WD.

    I know people with them consider them 'equals' to S3s, what do you guys think on the other side of the fence?

    The Leon is exactly what you have said - cheap! It's not as nice inside and it's pretty much as heavy as the S3 without the bonus of 4WD, I wouldn't myself (and I thought about it last year).

    And they've got 5 doors, that's just wrong!

    Thought about buying one myself until I realised that fact. We managed to get two kids, child seats, pushchair, shopping etc in Corrados for ten years so I'm not going to buy a sensible family car with an "R" badge now they're teenagers.

    the cupra R is a nice car but doesnt have the x factor if you like. Not that the S3 is super bling but it has a class the leon will never have.

    and its fwd which Ive vowed never to return to.

    The only plus point to the Leon is that it's faster on the strip.

    I looked at one as a possibility, and theres no-way i'd cosider it "equal" to an s3.

    well the M3 sold to the first viewer so Im now on the hunt :)

    budget 9k or 10k if it has some toys fitted (remap/fmic/springs/arbs that kinda thing)

    not sure if this is because I drive a pre facelift but i would focus more on how well the car has been kept. Service history, condition of the vehicle and of course all the toys you want. If you want cup holders though you have to go for the facelift, am i right? If an S3 is well kept it will not show its age, I have mine on a private plate and people are gobsmacked when i tell them it's 6 years old, you can still smell the leather!!

    well guys bought myself a 1999 S3. 86k, fsh, black leather everything I wanted. Its a bright red colour (not sure on the name) but it looks and drives like new. I found 2 stonechips on the whole car! Cambelt done at 80k too.

    Anyway well pleased - picking up on friday and it cost me £8600 so I was happy enough there. (NI Prices are a little higher than mainland).

    let the modding begin :)
