VW know people will buy it though so they might aswell charge as much as they can. Id rather buy a second hand car worth 40k, get a proper nice car for that !

I wouldn't pay £30k for a top of the range Golf, nevermind £40k! Much better options available for £40k new or used in my opinion, but give it a few years, and these Golf R's should be a bargain if they are any good.

Doesnt exactly look very exciting either does it, wheels look rather RS6ish & suspension is NASA territory, yes its probably a pocket rocket, but some more sportier styling would be nice for the 30k badge as he's added 9k of options.

    I checked the spec for a " standard " R

an engine, a metal box with a few windows, 4 sofas and 4 wheels , that about it.

the options looks like standard to me,

I dont like it, but as already mentioned, people will buy it....probably the die hard fans will, and then will be snapped up by the shedload as a 2nd hand bargain.

Why dont VW look at the way some of the cars are modded, i mean there are some beautiful looking Dubs on the scene, im not saying lairy spoilers etc, but something discreet that will attract a more positive response from buyers.

That just looks like a generic '4x4' to me...lol

I'm not sure I'd pay £40k for one fully loaded...
But £30k+ for a basic R or high spec GTI...why not?

It's easy to say you can have this or that, ...but how much does it cost to run an RS4?
Or service an Aston @ £1800 per year?
    Or the Bentley service costs?
Scirocco looks better...that's subjective...and it's not as practical.
S5, too big for many people.

Try speccing an S3 up with every option...and the cost is similar.
But nobody would thing twice of highlighting that.

The bottom line is, it'll sell at list...and some will option it up....and it'll still sell. It's low tax, and costs £250 to service for 3 years.
...and with a waiting list of 6 months for a GTI...and looking similar for an R...they are obviously pleasing some people out there.

It would have made more sense to develop a car that could be priced it at the same point as its predecessor the R32.
    40K is bonkers.

The S3 has been around for 3 yrs now so granted its not new, but with achievable discount upto 10% 30K will get you a very high spec S3.
So however good it may be, the Golf R will never be worth 10K more than its cousin IMO.
Besides, when you spend 40K on a `performance` car, then you want something pretty quick, assuming the R will weigh pretty much the same as an S3, have 4wd, same power etc.. then as std its wont be really that fast.

If I was spending around 40K on a VAG car then I would be think more like an S4.

    cheers

The trouble is...none of the cars recently mentioned does what the golf does in the same way...
S4 is huge...too big to park easily or garage for many.
TT is a 2+2 with a small boot.
S3 3dr is not as practical, and doesn't have the room inside...S3 Sportback in fugly (to me).
I'm not saying it's to everyones taste...but look at the orders already for them.
With deposits down, not a penny of discount and 6 months wait ahead...VW are selling as many as they can make.
So somewhere out there, there are plenty of people who ARE paying £30k+ for a Golf.

Personally, I wouldn't...as I don't think it's worth the premium over the GTI...but many are.

...and lets be fair, spec a S3 up with all the options, and see what it comes to price wise.
It sure as hell ain't £10k less than the Golf R!

I could buy 6 of these Golfs tomorrow cash jojo but i get a load of fun out of my 3.2 I love the smoothness of the V6 and i love the noise of the V6 with my Remus exhaust. Most of all i love the fact that if it blows up tomorrow or some one bashes it in tesco's.... it really doesn't matter. Bet you wouldn't feel like that if you had just spent £40k on you golf shopping trolley :)
You can get a good carrera 4S for £20k now !!! loads more fun :)

Well dont imply i dont want one because i havnt got the money I could buy what i want but i would not spend £40k on a car......period. in 3 years time your golf will lose 20k nearly £7k a year, that means you will lose £20 a day before you even start it up.

Just gave it a go and it came to ROTR £39,160. Got to say, I expected it to be more! Out of the 2, I'd have the S3 personally (not that I'd spend £40k on either a Golf or an S3) because the Golf looks a bit too standard for my liking.

As you said, they're selling like hot cakes so VW aren't complaining! Also, how many people out there have fully specced up their R's to £40k?

I've not implied anything, you've got the wrong end of the stick mate, are you reading the same posts as I'm typing?

I wouldn't buy a £40k Golf neither, but I WOULD pay £40k for the right car, and even though I could probably afford one right now, it makes no financial sense to buy, as like you say, it's a money pit in the short term.

I'd have to agree with alot of what you're saying here, aston I'd have in a heartbeat, but I also consider the running costs of every car I own even if I was fully loaded myself (wishful thinking) & tbh £1800 a year is a wishful dream, my mates aston was way over that for a simple service, how they get to that amount stuns me.

S3 spec'd up is hell of alot of dough tbh & couldnt justify it.

So if you consider all these elements instead of just the purchase price, then it might breakdown to just as expensive or lower overall to own than some of these others over the same period of ownership.

Is the S4 that huge, I dont recall from when I was sitting in one some months back, is it that much wider than B7?

The one thing that would stop me & does is the look, its atm rather boring, the GTI looks much better atm, cheaper & I always liked a GTI tbh, had the mk3 & loved it, had a number of MK3 VR6's & wasnt the same if I'm honest, but hey things move on, I still have a mk5 idea at the back of my mind & toying with scirocco, but the A3 is good for now as boring as some may think, but it suits atm.

Unless the Mk6 is bigger than the Mk5, and I dont believe it is, then thats not strictly true. The only difference I noticed between the S3 and MK5 having owned them back to back, was the slightly shallower boot in the S3.
So, same logic applied, there should be no difference between the S3 and Golf R with its 4wd layout.

Im a big fan of both the S3 and the Golf, but Fwiw I personally wouldnt pay 40K for either of them so it matters not to me.
Which brings us back to the old horses for courses cliche......

I threw 25K at a very lightly used S3 because in my mind, thats all I could justify to myself for a hatchback.

And 18month later I can say Im pleased i did!

    Cheers

    ...and why is that?
Because you somehow feel superior because you have a Audi?

What if you wanted 5 doors and didn't want a fugly sportback?

It is...it's about 1" wider accross the cabin.
Same platform as a Mk5...but every panel bar the roof is different.

Ther Golf is squarer in the back...you'll get 3 adults accross the back of a golf where you won't in the A3/S3 - certainly not without their heads touching the roof/side windows.
Same with the boot...a bit wider further up.

    I'm with you...neither would I personally.
But I can see why some would...

It's a fair step up in length and width from either an A3/Golf...maybe important to those parking in towns everyday.
Certainly, the A4 is too big for what I'd want.

    I agree.
I prefer the GTI and lots of change.

The defining moment will be how the R drives...
If it's typical 4WD Golf understeer city...they can keep it.
At least getting rid of that awful boat anchor of a V6 has given it a fighting chance.

If it's as numb and sterlie as an S3, they can keep it too.

If it's a GTI, with less wheelspin...then I may be interested...but in reality, it would need to look like a GTI, with a GTI interior and then 4WD and the S3 engine to make me reach for my wallet...and that's never going to happen.
Sadly, I fear it'll be another boring VAG 4WD understeer chariot.

    Time will tell...

If you could get a GTI with S3 engine and running gear, R brakes, GTI wheels (those R wheels are awful) and RS4 type buckets, half leather, with GTI cloth centres...i'd have a deposit down on one now.
And I'd pay £40k for it.

    But my money is safe...

The new Golf R is suppose to have the S3 2.0 Turbo unit Glen, hence they just called it an R, and not an R32 like previous models, and I believe it does have 4wd, infact it's an S3 underneath from what I've been reading!

    It is...this much we know.

And that's the problem jojo...it's likely to drive like the S3...rather than the GTI.
If it drives like the GTI, it would make it more interesting.

    But it'll still look boring.
Personally I find the R boring to look at...and I could happily do without the LED w**ker lights.

    I hear you...
Not sure I'd want the running costs though...
Or the lack of practicality...they are less useful than a 911 in many ways.

    Great car though...

If I may stepin here & knowing nate, I think its cause he prefers the interior to the Golfs overall, the current incarnation of A3 chassis do have better interiors, but saying this, the mk6 (aka mk5.5) & scirocco share & I was pleasantly surprised in a scirocco some weeks ago, it wasnt as bad as I thought when I was in a mk6 months back, strange tbh, but the A3 range are better IMHO, but each to there own.

Its pretty damn roomy in the mk6 thats for sure, where as the A3 is a little tight.

Ah yes fair point, in my mind I was comparing S4 B7-B8 for some strange reason, but also todays house's come with garages to just about fit a smart car in & just get out of your sunroof anyway.

I dont think I've ever agreed with you so much, lol, but yeah it reminds me of the old A3 Sline & the S3 comparison, there isnt much difference aesphetically tbh, but under the hood the S3 was mightier than any A3, as you say the drive will define this car, but damn me its bloody boring to look at huh, very unimpressive, bit like the new S4 aswell, didnt impress me one bit interms of styling.

I have to agree, the R32 was very very lacklustre when I test drove for a new car, the gti was much better/engaging & yes I know Ess why did I go for a 2.0 tdi, well I had the S3 for 7 years & the S4 for 2 & many other fair cars before, I just got fedup with pouring dough into shell etc's pockets, now I still do this but at a slower rate.

You would have a 4wd,thats a 1st I've ever read from you iirc, I'm sure I always read you saying you much prefer fwd given its more adventurous drive, challenge, so wouldnt fall asleep at the wheel, hence non S3 lover, lol
