As far as I know the dials are always lit... The only exception I know for this is when it gets dark and the car thinks that you should have your headlights on when you don't. The dials go dark to try and show you that you don't have your headlights on. Hope that helps a bit! :)

You're right, and that's why I was adding it to the original example. It's what could happen if the wipers didn't wait for you to re-activate them was what I was trying to get at. Haha.

And I'll add to that... What if you turn off your car when you get home with the wipers still switched on and overnight it freezes and snows. Wipers start when you switch on the car and burn out the motor. Not nice, had this happen to a girlfriend a while back so she was stuck without her wipers...

I don't know but I was told by the lads that do the tyre changing for Audi near where I live that if there is a 1mm difference front to back with the A3 quattro system then you should replace all four so the Haldex isn't being abused and running when it's not actually required.

The turbo groove brakes definitely make a hell of a noise under use. That's only because the grooves run right to the edge and the noise must be the air actually escaping from under the pads! I didn't mind though, it wasn't something as bad as squealing or anything. I ended up liking the noise...

I had the EBC Turbogroove discs that were grooved and dimpled. Looked awesome and were better for fast road use. Made a noise like a cricket when you used the anchors though, so long as you can put up with that. ;)

I've never seen a floating arrangement for the S3 discs. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist of course! ;) If you were looking for something to abuse on the track, I'd think that a 4 piston setup with some floating discs would be the better option? I know they're more expensive but would be better...

Maybe not, but I don't think that they were exactly being curtious, responsible drivers either. They must have been flying and driving like idiots to hit 8 parked cars, so for that they lose my sympathy.

I'd be saying 312mm, that's what mine were on my quattro. 345's are reserved for the 3.2, S3, R32, etc and I think that the 288's are too small. But then maybe it's different for the non-quattros?

I've just thought as well from looking at the two plots, mjr yours is at the wheel but Red yours isn't stated. Could the difference just be power at the wheels versus power at the flywheel?

If it's a diesel then it could be a DPF regen cycle if you hear a fan running at the same time?

I've never heard of a 140 quattro! Haha, that'll be why I was confused by the brake size. I thought that the diesel quattro cars were only availible with the 170 engine and therefore the 312mm brakes, sorry. :)
