If you change the rear pads you'll know if they are sticking if the dont wind back in. The other thing is the brake hoses are they expanding under pressure. This is usually an MOT failure and would be spotted there but something to look out for. Some copperslip on the back of the pad will help...

Have you changed the brake fluid recently.

bba reman repaired mine after the same communication problems. It seems to be a known problem with these cars when they get older. I'd go for that first as if the pump is knackered you would still get communication with the controller. Do you know or trust the garage or are they just trying it on.

What year is the car. I got my ABS module fixed by BBA reman 2 months ago. To replace need to remove passenger side wheel and wheel arch liner. Remove wash bottle. Then 6 torx screws to remove old unit. Mines didn't need coding and not sure if it needs to be done as long as part numbers match...
