The main problem is that the "anti sprog with head out of window system" kicks in with the added friction and lowers the window.Mine was always worse after long wet periods where the joints must have swelled!
Silicon spray (or wd 40) in the guide runners every now and again should sort it or at the worst water can get into the motor and rust one of the cogs up,strip, clean & grease and you can save your self 200 snakes for a new moter!
I think that you will find that all audi's are noisy from cold due to self adjusting over head cam system's initial lack of oil and usualy shuts up after a few seconds.
When the MAF was knacked on the wifes Beetle disconecting did'nt make a difference neither did cleaning it but once changed performance was mental,I used to clean the maf on my v6tdi every year or so and it made a world of difference and never had to change it.

If your timing was taht much out it would be rough all round,noisy and smoke like a bitch,VERY much doubt that your belt has "stretched" as they are not supposed to do this and the tensioner would have...

Fuel economy & plodding about ? Or high performance? The A6 is a large heavy car (1.5t+) that you can load 5 people in and the bagage quite happily, 115bhp I dont think so!
If you are looking for performance it has to be the V6 tdi

If you sorted your problem by cleaning the MAF looks like that's your problem,clean it again,get into the orifices with pipe cleaners or buy another well worth £70 if it solves your problem,I got a new one for the wifes Beetle and the differance was...
Leaking boot (water under spare wheel),Dirty or knackered MAF sensor,electric windows,Clogged up EGR valve,worn track rod ends/front suspension arms.
Check engine breather filter has been changed otherwise the v6 builds up block pressure and blows oil seals!!!
All modern cars share the same technology to an extent and subsequently have the same problems!
Go on any other make of car forum and you will see that they too are grumbling about Maf's,air bag warning lights,knackered ECU's,duff sensors,****** turbos etc.............and probably more like...

I know far too many people who's belts have broken and have been left with very expensive repair bills-Not worth the gamble!
Dealer can tell you a lot of things (maybe too much) and it wont cost you the earth £20/£30.
Your supposed to try with the Maf disconected not out, dangling about,not kin suprised it would'nt rev!!
Your Maf measures air flow to the engine and your ECU in return add's the correct amount of...
