Technically, an anpr camera will still be able to read an incorrectly spaced plate but the chance of a misread increases.
The biggest cause of misreads is actually number plate fixings (screws and caps)
At the end of the day you have to decide for yourself if it's worth the risk of a fine.

Being serious, if you change the spacing the police are very likely to pull you over and fine you. If you repeatedly use non standard spacing DVLA can revoke the registration.
