    no work done before failure just raced it around a lot, the gears failed so while I was down there I uprated the balance shaft. I fitted a new idler and helical spur gear, it was assembled hard in mesh and has gone well since the repair. in a way im lucky no more damage was done

    haha....your pet hate! of course not I did the full monty courtesy of KMB parts direct Sheffield. I took the sump off ready to do the conversion after the car broke down but found the gears had failed, absolute nightmare! the car has gone 12,000 miles since at a good pace and its a great ride!

    yeah the standard silicon seal is white so it should be as the factory left it! its a simple tool that locks the balance shafts in place while fitting...

    well, I did mine myself, dropped the subframe, A/C Pipes and the sump which has two badly placed bolts behind the flywheel to remove. you may want to remove the front bumper assembly so you can see and correctly mesh the idler gear if re-using it. or buy a new one for about £40 and assemble it...

    someone did a study of the failed pumps and found the balance shaft hexagonal keyway bore was running off centre by 0.1mm to the pump so it accelerated the wear on the hex key. some must be more concentric than others, motor way use would definitely be a positive factor though. who knows what...

    I just cleaned out the lift pump filter of my 2.0 tdi, I had a caterpillar and a layer of crap on the filter gauze, I think it goes better now, but I would after seeing that!!! I had no chance of getting the retainer ring off without a special tool from Bergen :)

    no problem ps I also had a leak at the bottom of the condenser, its holding pressure now.....I sprayed leak detection fluid all over the pipework joints until I saw the bubbles. good luck with your fix Henrik

    so quick question then....what the hell are the viewing slots for on the gearbox!!!! there is a metal gasket between each face half way through the slot so its a case of look at the 2 sump bolts but you have no chance of getting them out!!!!!!! arrrrggggg gearbox off!!!
