To close out the chapter, for anyone who has interest, I ended up transplanting both used sprockets I bought on ebay onto my existing cams, as my cams looked to be in better shape. The press fit was nice and tight. I indexed them on the cam primarily using the cam notch witness marks on the...
Has anyone ever replaced the belt tensioner on these 1.8's without removing the crank pulley? WAnted to put a new tensioner in while I have the top apart, but just replaced the belt last year, so want to save some work
If it passes close inspection I'll probably use the entire replacement used intake cam, but the exhaust is no good so will need to swap the sprocket. As far as press fit, the cam OD the sprocket presses onto is ground to a very smooth finish and there is no sign at all of galling after removing...
Had an issue with a blocked EGR passage in the head about 75k miles ago which caused a check engine light and installed a factory refurbished head at that time. Also within last 75k miles the oil pan gasket was redone, at which point the pickup was checked, so doubt there would be anything...
That's why I've been trying to figure out if anything else has gone wrong to cause this condition. My engine has 220k miles on it, but maybe the wear just accelerated exponentially after it went through an induction hardened layer? I still don't like how the chain I last installed had seams in...
I suspect it's not a big deal on these to swap lifters over. The example I used before of old American V8's in what I've been involved with over the years usually involve very high valve spring pressures and high rpm, which makes them very critical of any anomalies. Many of these souped up V8...
Thanks, but already have a OEM chain on the way (I think should be here today). I need to pull out my factory service manual to see what it may say about replacing the sprockets...
Here's the worse of the two. Yes, it's bad and the interesting thing is even though the rotational play of the chain on the sprockets was quite severe, the engine still ran well - albeit just with a little noise (the reason I took it apart). This is one reason why I think replacing the sprockets...
Nothing way off jumped out at me, but like you say they are often not perfectly lined up and without doing this on a regular basis it may be hard to distinguish what may be a tad too much. I would think visual wear of the teeth would be adequate indication, but whatever I missed it.
BTW...
I have a 2000 A4 1.8T on which massive wear on the teeth of both cam chain sprockets was just discovered. Everything else looks fine so far, but having a hard time believing just mileage caused it. I replaced the chain and tensioner last year and don't recall having noticed anything out of the...
